Story Context
Raelorasz (quest text): “Malygos has taken Keristrasza to serve as his consort!? Unthinkable! She’ll never cooperate willingly, but Malygos is a powerful aspect, and will eventually bend her will. This cannot come to pass. I refuse to allow her to suffer this indignity. You must enter the Nexus and do whatever is required to spare her this fate.”
Completion: “So, it is done then…. Our kind shall never forget the sacrifice Keristrasza has made for this cause. Nor shall we forget the part you have played. May this tragic event serve to further steel our resolve against the threat we face. On behalf of the Red Dragonflight, please accept this gift as a token of our gratitude.”
Note the careful phrasing: “release” her, “spare her this fate,” “do whatever is required.” Raelorasz knows exactly what must be done. It is a mercy killing.
Lore: A Fate Worse Than Death
After capturing Keristrasza at the end of “Springing the Trap,” Malygos forced her to become his new consort, replacing the Saragosa she had helped kill. Whether as revenge or a twisted attempt to gain an ally, he tortured her and branded her body with arcane runes until her mind shattered completely.
Her allies heard her cries of anguish and “disturbing whispers of her diminishing mind.” By the time adventurers reach her in the Nexus, there is nothing left to save. The dragon who thanked you for freeing her, who called you “dear friend,” who promised to repay your kindness, now exists only as a vessel of madness and pain.
Her combat dialogue:
Keristrasza yells: Stay. Enjoy your final moments.
Keristrasza yells: Preserve? Why? There’s no truth in it. No no no… only in the taking! I see that now!
Keristrasza yells: Now we’ve come to the truth!
Keristrasza yells: Finish it! Finish it! Kill me, or I swear by the Dragonqueen you’ll never see daylight again!
Keristrasza yells: Dragonqueen… Life-Binder… preserve… me.
Even in madness, she recognizes what’s happening. She begs you to end it. Her final words are a prayer to Alexstrasza, the Life-Binder, the Dragonqueen she served faithfully. Not to save her life, but to preserve whatever remains of her soul.

Vikstone's War Journal
“Malygos has taken Keristrasza to serve as his consort. Unthinkable!” Raelorasz couldn’t look at me. “She’ll never cooperate willingly, but Malygos is a powerful aspect, and will eventually bend her will.”
I remembered her standing over Saragosa’s corpse.
“This cannot come to pass. I refuse to allow her to suffer this indignity.” He finally met my gaze. “You must enter the Nexus and do whatever is required to spare her this fate.”
Whatever is required.
I understood what he was asking.
We went in as five. Wopak, a dwarf warrior who talked too much and fought like he meant it. Sikotic, a death knight whose runeblade hummed with the same kind of power that had done this to Keristrasza. Cathayia, a mage who’d been quiet since we entered Coldarra. Gabe, a priest, whose presence I was grateful for.
We fought through the chambers I’d seen before, past the rift I’d stabilized, past the crystalline horrors. Three bosses fell and three containment orbs activated. Then we stood in the foyer, looking at the dragon frozen in ice, and no one reached for the last orb.
“Someone has to,” Gabe said.
Three of us touched the orbs. The ice cracked, and what emerged was not the dragon I’d freed from the prison.
She attacked us. We had no choice.
The cold she radiated seeped into everything. Stand still for a heartbeat too long and the frost bit deeper, slowed your arms, clouded your thoughts. We fought her moving. Wopak and I traded her attention while Cathayia and Sikotic cut into her flanks. Gabe kept us standing, though every heal he cast cost him something I could see in his face. Crystal chains erupted from the ground and locked Wopak in place. I pulled her focus alone until Cathayia shattered the ice binding him.
She roared words that might have been pleas or curses, but the meaning was gone, drowned in whatever Malygos had done to her mind.
At the end, when her strength was failing and the madness broke just enough, she screamed. “Finish it! Kill me, or I swear by the Dragonqueen you’ll never see daylight again!”
So we did.
Her last words came as a whisper. “Dragonqueen… Life-Binder… preserve… me.”
Gabe knelt beside what remained and murmured something none of us were meant to hear. A prayer, maybe. Or an apology.
Raelorasz took a long time to speak.
“So, it is done then. Our kind shall never forget the sacrifice Keristrasza has made for this cause. Nor shall we forget the part you have played. May this tragic event serve to further steel our resolve against the threat we face.”
Northrend had another coast waiting where the longships at Valgarde were burning and the vrykul who set those fires had been dead ten thousand years.
