“The Ultrasonic Screwdriver is the ultimate tool. It can do anything to mechanical stuff! Head back into the pools and dismantle a number of Mechazod’s robots. Then all you have to do is use the screwdriver on their remains, and I’m betting that they’ll turn to our side, for a short time anyway.
I’m pretty sure it won’t work on the mechagnomes, so don’t even bother with them. Oh, and if you want to take anything from the robot’s insides, you’ll want to do so before using the screwdriver!”
-Crafty Wobblesprocket
Use the Ultrasonic Screwdriver to reprogram 15 robots and then return to Crafty Wobblesprocket at Fizzcrank Airstrip.
Make sure to loot the dead robot before you reprogram it.

You will be able to choose one of these rewards:
Upon completion of this quest you will gain:
Quest Giver: Crafty Wobblesprocket, Fizzcrank Airstrip [57, 18]
Turn In: Crafty Wobblesprocket [57, 18]
Objective: Use the Ultrasonic Screwdriver to reprogram 15 robots and return to Crafty Wobblesprocket.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
Head to the Scalding Pools and Geyser Fields area around [58, 20], east of Fizzcrank Airstrip near the pumping station.
Step-by-Step:
Valid Targets: Any mechanical robot in the pools area. The screwdriver does NOT work on mechagnomes (the converted gnomes), only on standard robots.
Corpse Sharing: You can reprogram robots killed by other players. If you see fresh mechanical corpses, use them.
Critical Warning: Loot Before Reprogramming
Crafty explicitly warns you: “Oh, and if you want to take anything from the robot’s insides, you’ll want to do so before using the screwdriver!”
Once reprogrammed, the corpse becomes your temporary ally and can no longer be looted. Engineers lose access to salvageable parts if they reprogram first.
Reprogrammed Robot Behavior
Converted robots follow you as temporary combat pets:
Pro Strategy: For difficult encounters like Gearmaster Mechazod, kill several robots near each other without reprogramming them. Then use the screwdriver rapidly on all corpses to create a small army before engaging the boss.
Efficiency Tips
Delay Turn-In: The screwdriver remains usable as long as you hold the quest. If you have other quests in the Geyser Fields, complete them first while enjoying free robot backup. You lose the screwdriver when you turn in or abandon.
Combine With Other Quests: This area overlaps with Re-Cursive (curing mechagnomes) and the broader Mechazod chain. Your reprogrammed robots help with all of them.
Lore Context
This quest represents turning Mechazod’s own army against him. The robots patrolling the Geyser Fields were built or repurposed by Mechazod to guard his operations while he converts kidnapped gnomes into mechagnomes.
By reprogramming them, you’re sabotaging his infrastructure while gaining tactical advantage.
Crafty’s completion text: “Woo hoo! And you brought back the screwdriver intact, too! Reprogramming those robots is going to turn out to be a huge advantage in our favor in the fight against Gearmaster Mechazod.”
Easter Egg: Depeche Mode Reference
The quest title “Master and Servant” is a reference to Depeche Mode’s 1984 single of the same name, released as the second single from their album Some Great Reward. Blizzard has included multiple Depeche Mode references throughout the game, including NPCs and other quests.
Players have also noted a possible Doctor Who connection: the Doctor’s robotic companion K-9 addressed him as “Master,” and there’s a recurring villain called “The Master” who is another Time Lord.
Combined with the Ultrasonic Screwdriver reference from the previous quest, this could be an intentional double reference.

Vikstone's War JournalCrafty handed back her screwdriver. “The Ultrasonic Screwdriver is the ultimate tool. It can do anything to mechanical stuff!”

She outlined the plan. Dismantle Mechazod’s remaining robots in the pools, then use the screwdriver on their remains. Watch them rise again, reprogrammed to our side.
“I’m betting they’ll turn to our side. For a short time anyway.” She paused. “I’m pretty sure it won’t work on the mechagnomes, so don’t even bother with them. Oh, and if you want to take anything from the robot’s insides, you’ll want to do so before using the screwdriver!”
Loot first, reprogram second. Priorities.
The work was straightforward, if strange. Kill a construct, rifle through its innards for anything useful. Point the screwdriver. Watch gears spin, optics flicker, hostile programming rewrite itself into something almost friendly.
Fifteen robots rose to temporary loyalty before I was done. They wandered the pools now, attacking their former allies with mechanical enthusiasm.
Crafty was delighted when I returned. “Woo hoo! And you brought back the screwdriver intact, too!” She clutched it like a long-lost child. “Reprogramming those robots is going to turn out to be a huge advantage. I think you’ve earned a little something for that.”
The remaining constructs would have a harder time now. Their own kind turned against them.
Crafty was finally satisfied there was still a gnome at the bottom of a magnataur cave in the Scalding Pools, which starts with Finding Pilot Tailspin.
