The unit you just dismantled had this inside of its mechanical innards. It looks pretty complicated… certainly someone back at the airstrip would want to take a look at it. Maybe Crafty Wobblesprocket?

Quest Giver: Item drop (discovery quest) from mechanical mobs at the Geyser Fields/Fizzcrank Pumping Station area
Turn In: Crafty Wobblesprocket, Fizzcrank Airstrip [57, 18]
Objective: Deliver the Ultrasonic Screwdriver to Crafty Wobblesprocket at Fizzcrank Airstrip.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
This quest begins when you loot the Ultrasonic Screwdriver from any mechanical mob in the pools surrounding the Fizzcrank Pumping Station [64, 23].
Mobs That Drop It:
The drop appears to be random but reasonably common. If you’re questing in this area, you’ll likely pick it up while doing other objectives.
Turn-In: Simply return to Fizzcrank Airstrip and speak with Crafty Wobblesprocket.
Crafty’s reaction: “My screwdriver… you found my screwdriver! I’d been wondering where that thing got lost. Hmm, you found it inside one of their robots, you say? That gives me an idea….”
Why This Quest Matters
While the quest itself is just a delivery, turning it in unlocks Master and Servant, which gives you the screwdriver as a usable item. In that quest, you kill mechanical enemies, then use the screwdriver on their corpses to reprogram them. The reprogrammed robots briefly fight for you before self-destructing.
Crafty’s description: “The Ultrasonic Screwdriver is the ultimate tool. It can do anything to mechanical stuff!”
Important Tip for Master and Servant: Loot the robot corpse before using the screwdriver. Once reprogrammed, the corpse disappears and you lose any loot.
Lore: The Mechagnome Crisis
This quest ties into the broader Gearmaster Mechazod storyline at Fizzcrank Airstrip.
The gnomes accidentally dug up titan-forged parts while building their pumping station. Unable to resist a puzzle, they reassembled the parts into a robot that called itself Gearmaster Mechazod.
He claimed to be one of the original mechagnomes created by the titans, and announced that modern gnomes were “flawed beings” corrupted by the Curse of Flesh. His solution: kidnap gnomes and forcibly convert them back into mechanical beings.
The robots patrolling the Geyser Fields are Mechazod’s army, including converted gnomes who no longer remember being alive. The Ultrasonic Screwdriver was Crafty’s tool before Mechazod’s robots absorbed it into their systems. Recovering it gives the Alliance a way to temporarily subvert Mechazod’s creations.
Easter Egg: Doctor Who Reference
The Ultrasonic Screwdriver is a direct homage to the iconic Sonic Screwdriver from the BBC’s Doctor Who series. The Doctor, a Time Lord, uses his sonic screwdriver as a multi-purpose tool for unlocking doors, disabling devices, and scanning technology.
Crafty’s claim that it “can do anything to mechanical stuff” mirrors the sonic screwdriver’s near-magical versatility in the show. The one limitation famously stated in the series is that it “doesn’t work on wood,” which Blizzard didn’t include, but the spirit of the reference is clear.
The comparison extends further: Mechazod’s forced conversion of gnomes into mechanical beings mirrors the Cybermen from Doctor Who, who similarly “upgrade” organic beings into cybernetic slaves, believing they’re offering immortality.
Cross-Expansion Connection: King Mechagon
The Curse of Flesh and forced mechagnome conversion return as major themes in Battle for Azeroth’s Mechagon Island content.
King Mechagon, a gnome who departed Gnomeregan 400 years prior, pursued the same goal as Mechazod: reversing the Curse of Flesh using a device called the Mechoriginator. His plan threatened to transform all organic life on Azeroth into mechanical beings.
Players who remember stopping Mechazod in Borean Tundra will recognize the echoes when confronting King Mechagon in the Operation: Mechagon megadungeon.
Explore Borean Tundra’s hidden easter eggs, lore mysteries, and connections across Warcraft history in Vikstone’s Borean Tundra Chronicles, along with the complete quest storyline.

Vikstone's War JournalOne of the mechagnomes I dismantled had something unusual in its innards. A tool, intricate and complicated, lodged among the gears and wiring. It looked gnomish.

Brought it back to Crafty.
Her eyes went wide. “My screwdriver! You’ve found my screwdriver!” She snatched it from my hands. “I’ve been wondering where that thing got lost.”
I pointed out where I’d found it. Inside a hostile construct, in the Scalding Pools.
“Hmm. You found it inside one of their robots, you say?” She paused, wheels turning behind her eyes. “That gives me an idea…”
I didn’t ask what the idea was. Sometimes it was better not to know until after the explosion.
Crafty had her screwdriver back and an idea forming, and she claimed it would do anything at all to mechanical things, which is how Vikstone ends up testing Master and Servant on fifteen of them.
