I’m Stuck in this Damned Cage… But Not For Long!
“The cultists magicked me into this cage and there’s no door to it. Little did they know that I’m the chief transmatter engineer for the airstrip! With your help, and a little elbow-grease, I won’t be in here for long. I’m going to need an engine-core crystal from one of the ghouls in here, a magical gyroscope from their doctor, and a piloting scourgestone from the lich-lord up top.
With all of that stuff, I should be able to make a port device to get back to Fizzcrank’s and escape the gnome way!”
-Tinky Wickwhistle
Collect an Engine-Core Crystal, a Magical Gyroscope, and a Piloting Scourgestone. Deliver them to Tinky Wickwhistle at Talramas.
Quest Giver: Tinky Wickwhistle, inside Talramas [69, 14]
Turn In: Tinky Wickwhistle (same location)
Objective: Collect an Engine-Core Crystal, a Magical Gyroscope, and a Piloting Scourgestone. Deliver them to Tinky Wickwhistle at Talramas.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
Tinky needs three components to build an improvised teleportation device that will get her out of the magic cage. Each drops from a different source inside Talramas.
Item 1: Engine-Core Crystal
Item 2: Magical Gyroscope
Item 3: Piloting Scourgestone
Navigation Tips
The path to Chillwinter is the trickiest part. There’s an exterior ramp that leads to the top of Talramas—many players miss this and wander the interior looking for an internal path that doesn’t exist. Watch for the transition from indoor hallways to outdoor platforms.
Stealth Approach (Rogues/Druids): You can bypass most trash by stealthing to each boss. However, be aware of tight corridors where patrols may detect you. Doctor Razorgrin has ghouls in close proximity, so positioning matters.
Combat Approach: Clear as you go. The respawn timer is forgiving enough that you won’t face re-cleared packs on your way out if you move steadily.
Boss Notes
Doctor Razorgrin (Level 72)
A Scourge surgeon who views arriving adventurers as “parts” for his experiments. His combat quotes are memorable:
Straightforward fight. No special mechanics. Kill the nearby ghouls first to avoid adds.
Lich-Lord Chillwinter (Level 72)
The commander of Talramas, desperately trying to repair the necropolis before the Lich King discovers the crash. His dialogue reveals his panic:
Also a straightforward fight. He’s a lich, so expect frost-based attacks, but nothing that requires special preparation at-level.
Lore: The Teleportation Accident
Tinky’s solution to escaping the magic cage is pure gnomish engineering: build a teleportation device from Scourge parts. Her confidence is characteristic: “Little did they know that I’m the chief transmatter engineer for the airstrip! With your help, and a little elbow-grease, I won’t be in here for long.”
But the device interacts badly with the dark magic of her cage. When she teleports out, the cage’s corruption splits her, creating an evil clone that materializes somewhere far colder than Borean Tundra.
Tinky immediately senses it: “My evil twin’s out there somewhere now. I’m pretty sure that she’s not back at the airstrip. In fact, wherever she ended up, it’s colder there than here. But I could only ‘feel’ her for a moment.”
She shrugs it off with typical gnome pragmatism. Bixie’s reaction is equally casual: “Tinky’s got an evil twin?! Well, if she says she’s okay, and that she’ll be able to get herself back to the airstrip soon, that’s good enough for me.”
Cross-Expansion Connection: Evil Tinky in Icecrown
The “colder place” where Evil Tinky materialized is Icecrown. By the time players reach the endgame zone, she’s established herself at the Savage Ledge [36, 24], competing to become a champion of the Lich King.
The quest Eliminate the Competition, given by The Leaper at the Shadow Vault, sends players to duel and defeat four aspiring champions, including Evil Tinky Wickwhistle.
Her personality is radically different from the cheerful engineer you rescued. Combat quotes include:
She uses Heavy Dynamite (AoE damage) and Wrench Strike (knockback). When defeated, she doesn’t die. Instead, she deploys a parachute and leaps off Savage Ledge, escaping to an unknown fate.
She has not been seen since. Whether Evil Tinky is still out there, plotting revenge, is one of WotLK’s unresolved minor mysteries.
Easter Egg: Tinky Winky Reference
Tinky Wickwhistle’s name is likely a reference to Tinky Winky, the purple Teletubby. The alliteration and the whimsical name construction (“Wickwhistle”) fit the pattern of gnome naming conventions while nodding to 1990s children’s television.
Explore Borean Tundra’s hidden easter eggs, lore mysteries, and connections across Warcraft history in Vikstone’s Borean Tundra Chronicles, along with the complete quest storyline.

Vikstone's War JournalTinky rattled the bars of her magical cage, more annoyed than frightened. “The cultists magicked me in here. No door.” She grinned. “Little did they know I’m the chief transmatter engineer for the airstrip. With your help, I won’t be in here for long.”

She had a plan. Of course she had a plan.
“I need an engine-core crystal from one of the ghouls, a magical gyroscope from their doctor, and a piloting scourgestone from the lich-lord up top.” She wiggled her fingers. “With all of that, I can make a port device. Escape the gnome way.”
I worked my way through Talramas from bottom to top.
The ghouls were the easiest. Found one with the crystal lodged in its chest and extracted it messily. Doctor Razorgrin was harder, and he looked up from his work table as I entered and smiled like I was a delivery he’d been expecting. “Ah, good. More parts.” He reached for a cleaver. “I recommend evisceration!”
He got the cleaver halfway up before my mace put him back on the table. Pried the gyroscope from what was left of his instruments.
Lich-Lord Chillwinter waited at the top of the necropolis, overseeing repairs with mounting panic. “If the Lich King finds out we crashed due to a malfunction, we’ll all be reduced to ashes!” He spotted me climbing toward him. “Filthy breather!”
He threw everything he had at me. Frost magic, death curses, summoned minions. I shattered him before his master could learn of his failure. I took the scourgestone from the fragments.
Tinky’s eyes lit up when I returned with the components. “Outstanding!” She was already working before I finished handing them over. “Now just a little modification here, and a tweak there…”
She applied this to Scourge technology. Either we’d teleport to safety, or we’d explode spectacularly.
With Tinky, it could go either way.
The device worked and Tinky went out of that cage in a flash of light, and something else came out the other side that was not headed for Fizzcrank at all, so somebody had better Let Bixie Know.
