Quest Giver: Chronicler To’kini at Zim’Torga, Zul’Drak [59, 57]

Objective: Use To’kini’s Blowgun on Frost Leopards and Icepaw Bears, then check under their tails to identify gender. Return with 3 female Frost Leopards and 3 female Icepaw Bears (6 total).

Prerequisite: Relics of the Snow Leopard Goddess (Har’koa chain at Zim’Torga).

Walkthrough

• To’kini gives you a blowgun. Use it (out of combat) on any Frost Leopard or Icepaw Bear to tranquilize it. The animal goes neutral and falls asleep.
• Right-click the sleeping animal to “lift the tail” and check its gender.
• If female: The animal becomes friendly and follows you around. Quest credit granted. No need to escort it back; the females despawn automatically when you return to Zim’Torga.
• If male: It wakes up angry and attacks you. Kill it or run away.
• The female rate feels low, roughly estimated at 20-30%. Expect to tranquilize 10-20+ animals total to get all 6 females. Bears seem particularly stingy with females.

Where to Find Them

• Frost Leopards: Near the Altar of Har’koa, around [65, 75]. Some also found around [74, 70].
• Icepaw Bears: Near the Altar of Rhunok, around [60, 36]. Some also found around [74, 70].
• The area around [74, 70] has both leopards and bears, making it a good spot to work on both objectives simultaneously.
• The quest text says animals can be found “near the Altars of Rhunok, Quetz’lun, and Har’koa,” giving you a wide search area across the eastern half of the zone.

Efficiency Tips

• You cannot use the blowgun in combat. Clear any nearby hostile mobs first.
• You can shoot the blowgun, mount up, then fly to the sleeping animal to interact with it. Saves travel time between targets.
• Angry male workaround: Hitting the animal with an instant ability (like Flame Shock or Arcane Shot) immediately after firing the blowgun can cause males to evade-bug instead of attacking. Warriors report Charge has the same effect. Pet classes with auto-attack pets (Felguard Intercept, DK Ghoul) sometimes trigger this naturally. This is a bug, not intended behavior, but widely reported.
• Identified females follow you across the zone and even briefly outside it, but don’t worry about losing them. They stay until you return to Zim’Torga, then despawn on their own.

Lore Note

To’kini claims Bah’kini is his “long-time student” in Just Checkin’, but here reveals more of his character: he wants to bring Zul’Drak wildlife back to Zandalar for study. His trapper was “killed in a most unfortunate accident,” and rather than go himself, he sends the adventurer.

The turn-in text is a gem: “These are sure to provide many hours of curious speculation amongst my colleagues back home.” The Zandalari are collectors and scholars to the core.

This quest was added in Patch 3.0.8 (January 2009), likely to help players reach the 100-quest requirement for The Empire of Zul’Drak achievement, as many players reported being stuck at 99/100.
