The Iron Colossus

Quest 3 of 3 in the Iron Colossus Chain (Finale)
Both Factions • The Storm Peaks • Level 80 • Bouldercrag's Refuge
Use a Tamed Jormungar to defeat the Iron Colossus.
Accepting this phases both Snowdrift Plains and Narvir's Cradle and sets the colossus loose to patrol, so do not take it unless you intend to finish it now. Grab an orb along the northern cliff edge near 27, 36 to mount a jormungar. Submerge with 1 to move, emerge to attack, and note you are rooted above ground so surface close.

The whole fight is keeping five Acid stacks up while dodging Ground Slam. Rotation is 3-2-2-2 repeating, and since neither shares a global cooldown you can fire both together. The colossus has 330,000 health against your 50,000, and Ground Slam lands 15,000 in a frontal cone with a long, clearly telegraphed cast. When it starts, submerge immediately and move forward past his circle to get behind him. Submerging does not make you immune, only mobile, so being underground in the cone still kills you. Press 1 once and keep moving. If the Acid drops off you lose the damage race, so consider firing one last stack right before you dive.

Stay in the open middle of the plains, since fighting near cliffs can reset him. If your worm dies you can still finish on foot for credit, or kite him back to the orbs for a fresh one.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Every attempt to stop it had failed and Bouldercrag said so plainly, which left facing it. The plan was Bruor's, built on the one thing that eats saronite, and his men had spent the siege capturing and training adult jormungar for exactly this. Afterward Bouldercrag's first thought was Ulduar.

“We have failed to prevent the completion of the iron colossus, Vikstone, which means we have no choice but to face it in battle. Bruor has devised a plan to exploit the colossus’ only weakness. No matter how tough the colossus’ armor is, it is still vulnerable to a jormungar’s acid.

Take control of one using the orbs along the northern edge of the Snowdrift Plains, then use it to fight the Iron Colossus on the Snowdrift Plains. If you need help controlling the creature, speak to one of the nearby handlers.”

Walkthrough

Phasing Warning: Accepting this quest triggers phasing across both Snowdrift Plains and Narvir’s Cradle. All normal mobs in both areas are removed and replaced with the quest scenario. The Colossus itself is pulled from its construction scaffolding and set loose to patrol the plains. If you don’t plan to complete this quest immediately, abandon it.

The phasing also prevents other players who aren’t on this quest step from seeing you, which means outside help is effectively impossible unless they are on the exact same quest phase.

  • Head to the northern cliff edge of Snowdrift Plains near [27, 36]. You’ll find Jormungar Control Orbs, Tamed Jormungar, and Earthen Jormungar Handlers stationed along the ridge. Click an orb to mount a jormungar.
  • While mounted on the jormungar, press [1] to Submerge (the only way to move), then burrow south to locate the Iron Colossus. It patrols the Snowdrift Plains and past Narvir’s Cradle. You cannot miss it. The Colossus is one of the tallest NPCs in the entire game.
  • Once in range, press [1] again to Emerge (you are rooted when above ground, so emerge close). Begin attacking with Acid Breath [3] and Jormungar Strike [2].

Tamed Jormungar Ability Reference

Key Ability Damage Cooldown Notes
[1] Submerge/Emerge — ~1 sec cast Toggle between underground (mobile, can’t attack) and surface (rooted, can attack). You can start moving the instant you press Submerge, before the animation finishes.
[2] Jormungar Strike Melee hit Short CD Bread-and-butter damage. Spam between Acid Breath casts. No shared global cooldown with [3].
[3] Acid Breath 3,700 initial + 1,300 every 2 sec for 15 sec (DoT) 6 sec Narrow frontal cone. Stacks up to 5 times. Must be facing the Colossus. Not on global cooldown, so you can fire [2] and [3] simultaneously.

The Fight

The Iron Colossus has approximately 330,000 HP. Your jormungar has 50,000. The entire fight comes down to two things: keeping Acid Breath stacked at 5 and dodging Ground Slam.

  • Damage rotation: Open with [3], then spam [2] while [3] cools down. The optimal pattern is 3-2-2-2-3-2-2-2, repeating. Since [2] and [3] have no shared global cooldown, you can press both simultaneously when Acid is available.
  • Ground Slam: The Colossus periodically casts Ground Slam (approximately 15,000 Nature damage in a frontal cone, ~5-7 second cast time). You’ll see a prominent raid warning emote on screen when it begins casting. When you see it, immediately press [1] to Submerge and move forward through or just past his targeting circle to get behind him. Do NOT wait for the burrowing animation to finish before moving. Once behind him, Emerge and resume your rotation.
  • Critical: Keep Acid stacks active. If your 5-stack Acid Breath DoT falls off, you will almost certainly lose the DPS race. Time your Submerge so you can resurface and reapply Acid before the 15-second duration expires. Some players fire one last Acid Breath right before Submerging to buy extra time.
  • Stay close to his targeting circle on the ground. The closer you are, the less distance you need to travel when dodging Ground Slam. Staying close minimizes downtime between dodges and attacks.

Known Jormungar Control Issues

This quest is notorious for clunky vehicle controls. The jormungar can feel sluggish and unresponsive. Specific problems to be aware of:

  • The worm turns around when submerging. The jormungar may do a 180-degree spin when hitting [1]. Holding right-mouse-button before and during Submerge helps prevent this. If it happens, just keep moving forward rather than trying to correct. You don’t have time to turn back around.
  • The Emerge/Submerge button has a ~1 second cast time that feels like input lag. Press [1] only once. Spamming it will cause you to submerge and immediately re-emerge (or vice versa), wasting your escape window.
  • Being underground does NOT grant immunity. Submerge only allows movement. If you’re still in the Ground Slam’s frontal cone when it lands, you take full damage even underground.
  • Keyboard controls recommended. Clicking the action bar buttons introduces extra delay on top of the existing sluggishness. Use number keys.

Efficiency Tips

  • Don’t fight near terrain edges. If you Submerge near the cliff edge or mountains, the Colossus can reset. Keep the fight in the open center of Snowdrift Plains.
  • If your worm dies, don’t give up. You still receive quest credit if you kill the Colossus on foot. The Colossus hits plate wearers for only 700-1,100 per melee swing (much harder on cloth, around 2,000-2,300). Tanks and self-healing classes (Blood DKs, Prot/Ret Paladins, Feral Druids) handle this comfortably. The same Ground Slam dodge applies on foot: run through his targeting circle when the cast begins.
  • You can get a replacement worm. If your jormungar dies and you can’t solo the remainder, kite the Colossus back toward the orbs at [27, 36] and mount a fresh one.
  • Hunters: If you activate Aspect of the Wild before mounting the jormungar, the Nature resistance buff reportedly carries over to the vehicle, reducing Ground Slam damage. This is a last-resort safety net, not a replacement for dodging.
  • Strip your gear before attempting. If you expect to die a few times, removing your equipment first prevents repair bills. Spirit Healer resurrection is often faster than corpse-running back to a patrol route.
  • Latency matters. If you’re playing at high latency or during peak server hours, the already-sluggish controls become significantly worse. You can attempt this during off-peak hours.

Lore & Context

This is the payoff for the entire 12-quest Iron Colossus chain. Bouldercrag’s quest text makes it clear that this is a last resort: “We have failed to prevent the completion of the iron colossus, which means we have no choice but to face it in battle.”

Every sabotage attempt (destroying the forges, killing the artificers, racing to secure the Heart of the Storm) has failed. The weapon is operational. The only option left is a direct fight.

The plan is Bruor Ironbane’s, not Bouldercrag’s. Bruor identified the one weakness in the saronite-iron armor: jormungar acid. His men captured and trained the worms specifically for this assault. This is the culmination of Bruor’s arc across the chain, from reluctant soldier (Facing the Storm) to hardened commander (Hit Them Where it Hurts) to battlefield tactician.

The Iron Colossus was constructed at Narvir’s Cradle using saronite and iron ore, powered by the Heart of the Storm (a titan power source from Uldis). Its purpose: reinforce Loken’s army in Ulduar.

Bouldercrag’s completion text pivots immediately to the larger threat: “We must warn Brann before Loken gets it in his mind to rebuild his forces. The only way to secure the victory you have won today is to go into Ulduar and defeat Loken for all time!”

This directly sets up the endgame arc: Loken is the final boss of Halls of Lightning, and his death triggers the failsafe that summons Algalon the Observer to evaluate whether Azeroth should be re-originated (all life wiped out). The destruction of the Iron Colossus is one small victory in a chain of events that escalates to cosmic stakes.

The Iron Colossus Legplates have the flavor text “Seems like they fit,” a tongue-in-cheek nod to the absurdity of wearing leg armor salvaged from a construct that towers over buildings.

Cross-Expansion Connections

  • The jormungar worms draw from Norse mythology’s Jörmungandr, the World Serpent. Using a mythological serpent to defeat a titan-forged weapon mirrors the Norse theme running through the entire Storm Peaks zone.
  • The concept of titan-forged colossi reappears throughout WoW. Ulduar itself contains multiple Ulduar Colossi as trash mobs, and similar constructs appear in titan facilities across later expansions.
  • After the events of Shadowlands, the Bronzebeard brothers revisited Storm Peaks locations including Narvir’s Cradle. Iron dwarves freed from Loken’s corruption were welcomed back into earthen society.

Easter Eggs

  • There is a possible reference to the 1999 animated film The Iron Giant, given the obvious parallels: a massive metal construct with a story about whether it must be a weapon.
  • It also draws from Frank Herbert’s Dune and its sandworm riding. The vehicle mechanic of controlling a subterranean worm to fight a giant enemy does echo the Fremen’s relationship with the sandworms of Arrakis.

Vikstone Portrait Act 3
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

We. He has said we about that every time, and I was the one who put a hand on the Heart and got a cyclone for it.

“Bruor has devised a plan to exploit the colossus’ only weakness. No matter how tough the colossus’ armor is, it is still vulnerable to acid. Bruor’s men have captured and trained a number of adult jormungar. Take control of one using the orbs along the northern edge of the Snowdrift Plains, then search the plains for the colossus and use your jormungar’s acid breath against it.”

Those are the things that ate the everfrost out of these mountains and cleared the icemaw bears out of the Hibernal Cavern down to one old female. I killed their spawnmother in that cave with a flank cut off one of her dead. And while I was doing that, Bruor’s men were along the northern edge of the Snowdrift Plains with orbs and handlers, teaching the survivors to come when called.

There is no waste in these people at all. It is the single most earthen thing I have seen since I came here.

The orb took me into the worm rather than onto it. There is a difference.

The colossus stood out on the plains and it did not look better close to. It is enormous and it is badly made and the two are not related, and when it moved the ground moved with it.

That thing had six or seven times what the worm had in it, and the acid does its work slowly, and the worm cannot strike from under the snow and comes up rooted where it surfaces.

So it went like this. Submerge. Cross the ground blind with the world above shaking. Come up inside its reach, spit, and hold there rooted while it decided what to do about me. Then down again before it finished deciding.

The acid does not cut. It stays where it lands and keeps working, and each spray goes on top of the last one, and after enough of them the leg plate began to run.

Lightning came off it and took strips out of the worm’s hide. It kept coming. That is the whole of what a jormungar is.

When the legs finally went, the thing came down across a good stretch of the plains and broke a trench where it landed. There was no dignity in the falling. It came apart on the way down at every seam the artificers had bolted rather than welded.

“We’ve done it, we’ve really done it! The refuge is spared and the stormforged are defeated!” Bouldercrag was not steady. “We must warn Brann before Loken gets it in his mind to rebuild his forces. The only way to secure the victory you have won today is to go into Ulduar and defeat Loken for all time!”

The colossus came down in the snow with the Heart still burning in its chest, and Bouldercrag’s first thought was not celebration but that Loken would simply build another, which meant the war moved south and the next thing anyone needed were Preparations for War.
