Walkthrough

• Fly to Valkyrion [24, 62]. The Nascent Val’kyr are the glowing, winged mobs flying above the settlement. Look up.
• They hover at varying heights but will descend to engage when pulled with ranged abilities. If you stand still on the ground, they will sometimes aggro and come to you.
• With a flying mount, you can engage them at their altitude directly. Without one, use ranged pulls and wait for them to path lower.
• They are level 79-80 and die quickly. Straightforward kills with no special mechanics to worry about.

Efficiency Tips

• Complete alongside the other three Valkyrion quests, all picked up at Brunnhildar Village:
  • Aberrations: Farm Frost Oil from Valkyrion Aspirants, destroy Plagued Proto-Drake Eggs.
  • Yulda’s Folly: Kill Yulda the Stormspeaker at [24, 62]. Grab the chest next to her for Valkyrion Must Burn.
  • Valkyrion Must Burn: Use harpoon guns at [27, 60] to ignite haystacks.
• You’ll naturally kill Val’kyr while doing the other quests since they aggro frequently throughout the area. Start farming Aspirants for Frost Oil first, and you’ll likely finish this quest passively.

Lore & Bestiary

The Nascent Val’kyr

“Nascent” means these vrykul women are mid-transformation, not yet fully reborn as Val’kyr. They’ve been judged worthy by the Lich King but haven’t completed the process. You’re killing them before they finish becoming his winged spirit agents.

The Scourge Val’kyr are a corrupted version of a much older concept. The original Val’kyr were warriors of the Light, created by Odyn to ferry the souls of heroic vrykul dead to the Halls of Valor. The Lich King learned of them and reverse-engineered the process, creating his own dark Val’kyr to serve as necromantic agents in the spirit world.

A Hyldnir Civil War

Iva’s quest text drips with contempt. She calls the Valkyrion vrykul “lapdogs,” “winged she-wolves,” and compares them to harpies. The Brunnhildar Hyldnir rejected the Lich King’s emissaries three times (dismembering each one), while their Valkyrion sisters accepted the Scourge’s bargain.

This quest is effectively one side of a vrykul civil war, with the player acting as Brunnhildar’s instrument of punishment.

Val’kyr After the Lich King

• After Arthas falls, several Val’kyr defect to Sylvanas Windrunner, giving the Forsaken the ability to raise new undead for the first time. This becomes a major political flashpoint in Cataclysm and beyond, as Garrosh challenges Sylvanas over whether this makes her “no different from the Lich King.”
• In Legion, the original Odyn-created Val’kyr play a central role in the Stormheim storyline. Sylvanas attempts to enslave Eyir, the Val’kyr leader, using a deal struck with Helya. Genn Greymane smashes her lantern and foils the plan. The distinction between Odyn’s Val’kyr (Light-born) and the Lich King’s Val’kyr (Scourge-born) that players first encounter here in Valkyrion becomes a key plot thread for years.
