There is an old army encampment. What I will show you will teach you a little bit about who you’re up against.”

Matthias Lehner’s Lesson
This quest is brilliantly designed as a narrative setup. You spend several minutes in a powerful siege engine, obliterating 150+ Scourge with devastating AoE attacks, feeling utterly dominant.
Then Matthias delivers the punchline on turn-in: “You killed your fair share, but for every one you destroyed, another rose from the dirt to take its place. You don’t know what you’re up against. Let me show you.”
The entire point of the quest is to demonstrate futility. No amount of military force can defeat the Scourge conventionally, because they simply raise more dead. This is the core argument Matthias has been building since Naz’anak: the Lich King’s power is not in his armies, it is in his ability to create armies infinitely from the fallen.
The chain’s next quests (Army of the Damned, Futility) drive this point home further through Arthas’s own memories.

Vikstone's War JournalMatthias Lehner was standing beside the demolisher when I came back to it. He turns up where he likes.

“You’re going to use this machine against the Scourge? You’re not going to win against them like that. You can destroy hundreds… even thousands of them. But you won’t win. Not out here.”
Then: “When you’re done playing with your machine, meet me to the north. There is an old army encampment. What I will show you will teach you a little bit about who you’re up against.”
I climbed in anyway.
There is an ocean of them in that valley. Decomposed ghouls across the low ground, Frostskull magi working frost above them, and the Bone Giants coming through the middle of it with armor still hanging off the bones they were assembled out of. Some of that armor was blue.
The machine does three things. It rams, and a body goes twenty yards. It puts a boulder on a spot of your choosing at seventy yards, and a boulder is enough to finish a ghoul or a magus outright, one for one, every time. And it can run at double speed for a short while, which I used for repositioning and never once for leaving.
I sat in that seat for hours. A hundred and fifty ghouls came apart at seventy yards. Twenty magi after them. Two Bone Giants, four boulders apiece.
And for every ghoul the boulder finished, the ground opened and gave up another. Every magus I broke was replaced out of the dark behind it. The giants came down and were rebuilt behind their own wreckage out of whatever had died most recently.
He was waiting at the First Legion Forward Camp, which somebody built once and left.
“You see? You killed your fair share, but for every one you destroyed, another rose from the dirt to take its place. You don’t know what you’re up against, Vikstone. Let me show you.”
I followed him north.
The boy did not bring Vikstone to a ruined encampment to argue with him, and what he intends to show him there is the Army of the Damned.
