“My main concern is the saronite quarry down the path to the southwest. They are pulling up immense amounts of ore from that quarry and I’d like to know what they’re building with it. To that end, we’ll start by weakening their defenses.
I noticed a series of crystals scattered throughout the base and I assume they are defensive structures of some sort, not unlike ziggurats. Use the eidolon watcher to destroy any of those crystals that you find.”

Lore Context
Keritose’s focus here is the Weeping Quarry, a massive saronite mining operation southwest of the Shadow Vault.
The Scourge is pulling “immense amounts” of saronite ore from the quarry, and Keritose wants to know what they’re building with it. Keritose guesses at what the crystals are rather than knowing, saying he assumes they are defensive structures of some sort, not unlike ziggurats, the signature Scourge defensive towers from Warcraft III. Destroying them clears the way for Ebon Blade gryphon operations in the area.
Saronite itself is the crystallized blood of Yogg-Saron, the Old God imprisoned beneath Ulduar. Mining and working with saronite drives workers insane, which is why the Scourge uses mindless undead labor.
If you look into the water at the bottom of the quarry, you can see one of Yogg-Saron’s maws, a small environmental detail connecting this area to the broader Old God threat.

Vikstone's War Journal“My main concern is the saronite quarry down the path to the southwest,” Keritose said. “They are pulling up immense amounts of ore from that quarry and I’d like to know what they’re building with it. To that end, we’ll start by weakening their defenses. I noticed a series of crystals scattered throughout the base and I assume they are defensive structures of some sort, not unlike ziggurats. Use the eidolon watcher to destroy any of those crystals that you find.”

The quarry is called the Weeping Quarry and it goes down further than I could see from the rim. I went in wearing the shade, transparent, past a working face where the Cult had men on the seams and carts running, and nobody so much as turned.
The crystals stand on pillars over the pit. Purple, tall as a man, and the shade does not break them. It has a word for them and the word sends them somewhere. They do not shatter. They stop being there.
The Ebon Blade’s own name for them is Scourge Containment Crystals, and I did not think anything of that until the fourth one, and then I could not stop thinking about it. Containment is not a word for a wall. Containment is a word for a lid.
Keritose does not know what they are. He said so. He assumed defensive structures, because that is what a soldier assumes about anything standing at the edge of a base, and the man who named them did not agree with him.
So I took ten lids off a saronite quarry for a death knight who wanted the sky clear.
“Are those crystals out of the way? I don’t want them to prove a nasty surprise for my gryphons.”
Gryphons. There is an air operation coming and this was the ground work for it.
“Excellent work. We should have little threat in the air then.”
The next thing standing between the Ebon Blade and the quarry floor had a nose rather than eyes, so getting past it was a question of what makes An Undead’s Best Friend.
