The Malykriss Revelation
This quest contains one of the most important story reveals in the Shadow Vault chain. Keritose reads through the documents you bring back, initially finding nothing new. Then he spots something: “Malykriss! The Vile Hold.”
The massive amounts of saronite being mined at the Weeping Quarry are being sent to construct Malykriss, the Vile Hold, the Lich King’s planned replacement for Acherus: The Ebon Hold.
After the death knights defected from the Scourge at Light’s Hope Chapel, the Lich King lost his primary necropolis for death knight operations. Rather than recapture Acherus, he decided to build something bigger and better from scratch, using saronite mined from Yogg-Saron’s crystallized blood.
Keritose’s reaction is dry: “I’m not exactly sure what he’s doing with all of that saronite, but I have a feeling he might be overcompensating for something. That boy is not used to losing.” The idea of the Lich King throwing a construction tantrum because the Ebon Blade broke free is one of the more humanizing (and entertaining) takes on Arthas in the expansion.
This discovery directly leads to Vereth the Cunning, where the Ebon Blade infiltrates Malykriss itself.

The wetwork. He has a word for every part of this.
I came off the gryphon into what I had just finished doing. The quarry was quiet and there were still things on the ground that had not entirely stopped, and I walked past all of it looking for paper.
It was not hidden. The Cult keeps records the way any quartermaster keeps records, in the places you would expect to find them, because until this week nobody had ever come down there to look.
A ledger, first. Tonnage by the week, and the totals at the bottom of each page are not a mine’s numbers. A schedule of deliveries, with dates against them and nothing at all against the return trips. A map of the extraction sites, marked in a hand that had marked a great many of them. And correspondence, which I did not read.
I brought all four back up.
“Let’s see here… what do we have…”
He put his head into the papers and stayed there a while, and I watched him go through the ledger and the schedule and the map without stopping once, because none of it was news to him. He knew the tonnage. He knew the roads. He has known where most of it goes for some time.
Then he found the thing he had been looking for the whole while.
“Malykriss! The Vile Hold.”
Malykriss was a name on a ledger and nothing more until somebody got inside it, and the Ebon Blade’s way in was never going to be a gate or a gryphon but a man already standing at the door with a reputation for getting people through, Vereth the Cunning.
