“Every day, the Black Knight’s squire, Maloric, makes a big show of heading to Crystalsong Forest with his axe over his shoulder. He wants us to believe he’s chopping wood, but he never returns with more than a few twigs. He usually goes toward the ruins southwest of the Mirror of Twilight. He spends a lot of time out there, even for a squire with responsibilities to his knight.
Find a way to distract or incapacitate him and search him. If he’s up to something, we’ll know it.”

What You Find
The Murderer’s Toolkit contains poison (the kind that killed Lorien Sunblaze), a collection of knives, torches, and oil. Rhydalla concludes that Maloric is the direct killer, acting on his master’s orders. This shifts the investigation from “who committed the murders” to “who is the Black Knight working for,” which drives the remaining quests in the chain.

Vikstone's War Journal“Every day, the Black Knight’s squire, Maloric, makes a big show of heading to Crystalsong Forest with his axe over his shoulder. More elven ruins, southwest of the Mirror of Twilight. That is the third errand this fortnight that has sent me into my own people’s stonework on somebody else’s business.
Skeletal Woodcutters work the ground outside them. One gave up a thighbone long enough to swing, which was the appropriate tool for the job.
The method is not optional. You cannot fight the man. Come at him from the front and he defends himself and there is nothing left on him worth having. So you walk up behind a squire standing there with his axe on his shoulder, and you put a bone across the back of his head, and then you go through his bag while he is face down in the moss.
Yesterday Rhydalla told me that Conall Irongrip had died of a coward’s strike and not honorable combat. Today she sent me to do that to somebody with a piece of a skeleton.
He was carrying something called a Murderer’s Toolkit. Some genius had named it.
Crusader Rhydalla examined the bag’s contents with a look of disgust on her face. “It’s all here, Vikstone: the poison that killed Lorien, a collection of knives, torches, and oil. No man has cause to possess these things here and no squire would do so without orders from his knightly master.”
No squire would do so without orders. Maloric will wake up in an hour with a headache and no bag, and he will have to go and tell his knight what became of it.
Rhydalla had her killer and still no name above him, and the answer to who gives a squire poison and oil is sitting in The Black Knight’s Orders.
