“Our next customer, Jack Adams, won’t be the pushover that Harry was. He spends all day drinking with his friends, tough pirates all of them. Let’s not use force this time, could get ugly. See if you can use his drinking habit to your advantage. There’s only so much alcohol someone can handle before passing out. Maybe one of the bar wenches will be of assistance.

Vikstone's War Journal“Our next customer, Jack Adams, won’t be the pushover that Harry was.”

Taruk counted on his fingers.
“He spends all day drinking with his friends, tough pirates all of them. Let’s not use force this time, could get ugly.”
A tuskarr advocating for subtlety?
“See if you can use his drinking habit to your advantage. There’s only so much alcohol someone can handle before passing out. Maybe one of the bar wenches will be of assistance. Once he’s out, see if you can slip your hand into his pocket and get what’s mine.”
I found Olga near the fire pit, and she listened to my proposal closely.
“You’re going to pull off a stunt on Jack in front of his boys? That takes a good amount of… stupidity.”
She held out her hand.
“Well, it’s going to cost you. I’m not going to risk my life for anything less than a gold.”
I paid. She delivered.
“All right, fellas! Who ordered the spiced rum? Was it you, Jackie boy?”
Jack looked up from his circle of rough companions. “Sure thing, love. Put it on Harry’s tab, will you? He owes me a drink!”
“It’s okay, sweetheart. This one’s on the house.”
Jack’s face lit up. “Free rum? Why… that’s me favorite kind!”
He drained it in one pull. His eyes went wide.
“Sweet Neptulon! That was… one drink… too many!”
He hit the ground like a felled tree. His friends barely glanced up from their cards.
I slipped my hand into his coat pocket, and the debt came out easily.
By the time Jack stirred, I was halfway back to Taruk. “What are you lot looking at? Pour me another drink!”
Taruk counted the coins.
“I’m impressed. And I’m not the type who’s easily impressed.”
Two collected, and the third was going to be neither a fire mage nor a drunk, as the Rusty Iron Key Taruk handed over rather suggested, because this one is a Dead Man’s Debt.
