Vikstone's War Journal“You might’ve heard of Black Conrad. He’s a famous pirate around these parts.”

I had. His sunken fleet still littered the sea floor south of Scalawag Point. I had retrieved Amani relics from that wreckage just days ago.
“Well, he had a thing for gambling on my fights. He had a thing for not paying, too.”
Taruk’s fights. I looked at the tuskarr with new appreciation. Debt collector and fight promoter… quite the operation.
“I’d love to collect, but trouble is… he’s dead.”
He unfolded a weathered map.
“I was about ready to write the whole thing off, when I came across this.”
An X marked a plateau on the northeastern end of the Isle of Spears, north of Iskaal. Tuskarr land.
“He hid his treasure on tuskarr land. I want you to get it. I’ll be damned if I let that bilge sucker get away without paying.”
The climb was cold, and the plateau was colder. But the X was accurate, and Black Conrad’s treasure was exactly where the map promised. The dead pirate had been meticulous about hiding his wealth, if not about honoring his debts.
Taruk sorted through the haul.
“I’ll take the gold, as it is what Conrad owed me. The rest is for you to keep.”
He paused.
“If you’re ever in need of something more permanent, I’m sure I could arrange for something. In the meantime, may the wind blow strong in your sail, friend.”
“May the wind blow strong in your sail, friend.” He meant it. That was the strangest part.
Taruk’s books were settled and Scalawag Point had one errand left in it, since a deckhand called Scuttle Frostprow wanted Swabbin’ Soap and was willing to keep paying for it.
