“I need to compile my notes and prepare a presentation for my colleagues in Dalaran. While I do, I must ask that you visit the Winterfin Cavern to the north. You must use the Arcanometer while standing in the mouth of the cavern. Return to me at once when you have the data. My documentation will be incomplete without it.”
-Libarian Garren

Upon completion of this quest you will gain:
Quest Giver: Librarian Garren at Amber Ledge [45, 33]
Turn In: Librarian Garren at Amber Ledge [45, 33]
Objective: Use the Arcanometer at Winterfin Caverns.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
Cave Location: [40, 19] or [40, 20], at the back of the Winterfin murloc village on the eastern shore across from Coldarra.
IMPORTANT: The cave is NOT on Coldarra. It’s on the mainland, on the eastern edge of the water separating the mainland from Coldarra. Approach from the east, not the west.
Getting There
Option 1: From Amber Ledge (Swimming Route)
Take the cliff trail down to the water at [47, 28]. When you reach the murloc encampment, swim across to the cave at [40, 20].
Option 2: From Fizzcrank Airstrip (Faster)
Fly to Fizzcrank Airstrip, then head straight west. You’ll come to a path leading northwest, which descends to the water directly across from the beach below the cavern. This route involves less swimming and is generally faster.
Option 3: Cold Weather Flying (Easiest)
If you have Cold Weather Flying (available at level 77, or earlier via the BoA tome), you can fly directly to the cave entrance or land on the rocks above it.

Positioning is Critical:
Unlike the previous two anomalies (which had visible purple glowing effects), this location has no obvious purple marker. Instead, look for:

Quest Pairing Opportunity
If you’re already heading to Winterfin Village, consider picking up the murloc questline from King Mrgl-Mrgl at Winterfin Retreat. Several quests can be completed in the same area:
Efficiency Tip: Complete the Arcanometer reading at the cave entrance, do Keymaster Urmgrgl deeper inside, then pick up the escort quest on your way out.
Story Context: Garren’s Report Complete
Garren is businesslike as he sends you on this final errand:
“I need to compile my notes and prepare a presentation for my colleagues in Dalaran.”
“While I do, I must ask that you visit the Winterfin Cavern to the north. You must use the Arcanometer while standing in the mouth of the cavern. Return to me at once when you have the data. My documentation will be incomplete without it.”
Upon return, Garren’s work is done:
“Excellent, this completes my report. I’ll be sure to mention your kindness to the council, <name>.”
Lore: The Caverns and the Murloc Madness
What Garren doesn’t know is that the Winterfin Caverns aren’t just another data point. They’re ground zero for a tragedy.
The Winterfin tribe is the first friendly murloc tribe players encounter in WoW. They lived peacefully in their village until recent earthquakes (caused by Malygos’s ley line redirection) exposed the caverns beneath their home. A deranged makrura named Claximus emerged and stole their children.
When adult murlocs pursued Claximus into the caverns, they were exposed to magical emanations from Coldarra. The arcane energy affected their minds, allowing Claximus to enslave them. The survivors retreated and regrouped at what is now called Winterfin Retreat.
King Mrgl-Mrgl (actually in disguise in a murloc suit) later confirms the connection: “And you say that Lurgglbr discovered that the emanations from the caverns are what caused this insanity? It must be that the magic from Coldarra is growing stronger. The Nexus War… the battle between the blue dragonflight and all of the other dragons, is spilling over. Soon, we will all be embroiled in it!”
The readings you take for Garren document the same magical emanations that drove the Winterfin murlocs mad.

Vikstone's War JournalGarren was already buried in notes when I returned.

“I need to compile my notes and prepare a presentation for my colleagues in Dalaran.” He didn’t look up. “While I do, I must ask that you visit the Winterfin Cavern to the north. Use the arcanometer at the mouth of the cavern. My documentation will be incomplete without it.”
Winterfin Cavern. I’d been there already. Killed a makrura who’d been using the magic seeping from those tunnels to control the local murlocs. The place still reeked of it.
I stood at the cavern’s mouth. The arcanometer whined the moment I activated it, readings spiking higher than I’d seen at either previous site. Whatever was bleeding through from Coldarra, this was where it pooled. This was where it had driven an entire murloc tribe to madness and civil war.
“Excellent. This completes my report.” Garren met my eyes. “I’ll be sure to mention your kindness to the council.”
Maybe the mages could do something about it before more innocents lost themselves to Coldarra’s overflow.
Coldarra was not going to wait for a council to convene, because somebody at Amber Ledge needed a hand in the Nick of Time.
