Walkthrough

Anomaly Location: [34, 42], on the southern shore of Coldarra (technically still in Borean Tundra, not on the island itself). Look for a purple, Y-shaped crack in the rocks at the water’s edge.

Visual Identification: The anomaly appears as a distinctive purple “Y” shape on your minimap. It glows with chaotic arcane energy and is visible from a distance. Players compare its appearance to the energy rifts found in Hellfire Peninsula.

Navigation Aid: As you approach the area, a golden arrow appears on your minimap guiding you directly to the anomaly.

Getting There

Option 1: Blue Torch Path (Recommended)

From Amber Ledge, take the path marked with blue torches that leads down toward the water:

• Start at the path beginning around [45, 36]
• Follow it down, then veer right at [43, 35] where another blue torch path leads to the water’s edge
• Swim, ride, or levitate to [34, 42]
• The return path up is at approximately [43, 33]

Option 2: From Garrosh’s Landing (Horde-Convenient)

If you’re at Garrosh’s Landing [33, 48], the anomaly is a short swim directly northeast. Face northeast from the beach, and you’re looking right at it.

Option 3: Beryl Point Shortcut

There’s a pathway into the water at the edge of Beryl Point [41, 42], northwest of Amber Ledge, which puts you almost directly across from the anomaly.

Travel Tips: Death Knights can use Path of Frost to run on water directly to the anomaly. Shamans with Water Walking, Priests with Levitate, and anyone with water-walking potions will find this trivially easy. No hostile mobs patrol the water or the anomaly area.

Using the Arcanometer

The Arcanometer is a quest item in your bags. To use it:

1. Stand INSIDE the purple anomaly (not just near it)
2. Click the Arcanometer in your inventory
3. The reading is taken automatically

Story Context: Early Warning Signs

Librarian Garren introduces himself and the situation:

“Greetings, <race>. I am Garren of Dalaran.”

“Not long ago, the rift was a peaceful place, geothermally speaking at least. Recently though, earthquakes have occurred with alarming frequency and scars in the earth have appeared, exposing unique energy fields of chaotic power.”

“My mission here is to chart and monitor these anomalies. My instruments indicate that another has appeared on the cliff face to the southwest. Take this device with you and use it when you locate the new disruption.”

Upon return, Garren is alarmed:

“Fascinating! This is the largest disruption yet. Though the worst is yet to come, I fear.”

Lore: The Nexus War Begins

The earthquakes Garren investigates are not natural. They’re the opening salvo of Malygos‘s campaign against mortal magic users.

After millennia of isolation following the near-destruction of the blue dragonflight during the War of the Ancients, Malygos finally returned to his senses and assessed the state of magic on Azeroth. He concluded that magic was “running amok” and blamed mortal spellcasters for reckless overuse.

His solution: use the Arcanomicon (a map of the world’s ley lines gifted by the titan Norgannon) to redirect all magical energy to Coldarra, where he could control it. The energy would be channeled through the Nexus and blasted into the Twisting Nether.

The consequences were catastrophic: “Malygos’s redirection of the ley lines has carried disastrous consequences, splintering the world’s crust and opening unstable rifts: tears in the very fabric of the magical dimension.”

These rifts are exactly what Garren is documenting. The Kirin Tor sent him to Amber Ledge to monitor the situation because they sensed something terrible was happening. What he finds here will eventually lead to Dalaran itself relocating to Northrend and the full-scale conflict known as the Nexus War.

Efficiency Tip: Quest Pairing

Consider picking up Prison Break before heading to Coldarra. That questline also requires travel to the area and rewards a free dragon flight to Coldarra, saving travel time if you’re doing multiple quests in the region.

Quest Chain Overview: Monitoring the Rift

This is a simple three-quest chain that takes approximately 15-20 minutes total and yields over 55,000 XP plus significant Kirin Tor reputation:

1. Monitoring the Rift: Cleftcliff Anomaly (this quest) – 150 Kirin Tor rep
2. Monitoring the Rift: Sundered Chasm – underwater location [43, 29], Garren provides water breathing
3. Monitoring the Rift: Winterfin Cavern – cave entrance near Winterfin murloc camp [40, 19], choice of green gear reward

Total Chain Reputation: 650 Kirin Tor (150 + 150 + 350)

All three locations involve finding purple anomalies and using the Arcanometer. Low combat, high reward.

Easter Egg: Flux Capacitor

The Y-shaped purple anomaly looks strikingly similar to a flux capacitor from Back to the Future: “It’s the flux capacitor! Doc Brown, you clever dude!”

Achievement Opportunity

If you decide to shortcut by diving off the cliffs behind Garren’s tent rather than taking the blue torch paths, you might earn Going Down? for falling 65 yards without dying. Just make sure you land in the water.
