Quest Giver/Turn In: Raelorasz at the Transitus Shield [33, 34]

Objective: Use Raelorasz’s Spear to subdue a Nexus Drake Hatchling and return it to Raelorasz.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Accept the Quest and Get the Spear

When you accept the quest, you receive Raelorasz’s Spear. The spear has an 80-yard range, which is significantly longer than most abilities.

Step 2: Find a Nexus Drake Hatchling

Nexus Drake Hatchlings fly high in the sky around the northwest edge of Coldarra, west of the Nexus.

Good Locations:

• Elevator Platform [22.7, 24]: Take the elevator on the western platform to the top. Hatchlings fly directly past at an easy targeting height.
• Northwest Bridge [26.7, 24.7]: Hatchlings fly right overhead.
• Ground Level [27, 30]: They pass overhead here as well.

Video Settings Note: If you’re having trouble spotting drakes, increase your View Distance to High. On low settings, they may not render until they’re very close.

Targeting Macro:

/tar Nexus Drake

/use Raelorasz’s Spear

With Flying Mount (Level 77+): This becomes trivial. Fly close enough to aggro a hatchling, land, dismount, and use the spear while it attacks you.

Step 3: Subdue the Drake

After hitting the hatchling with the spear:

Do NOT walk away. Stand still and wait approximately 25 seconds (some reports indicate 10 seconds in later patches) for the drake to become subdued. If you move too far from the area where you caught it, the drake will break free.

Do NOT attack the drake. Just let it hit you while you wait. The damage is minimal.

Step 4: Return to Raelorasz

Once the drake turns friendly and you receive the “Drake Hatchling Subdued” buff, you have 3 minutes to return to Raelorasz.

You CAN mount while the drake follows you. Flying mount makes this trivial at level 77+.

Step 5: Turn In

Return to Raelorasz. He will kill the hatchling with a fireball (“A wonderful specimen.”) and reward you. The quest becomes repeatable as a daily.

Tips

• Group Completion: The quest can be completed in a group by subduing and returning only one hatchling. Everyone in the group gets credit.
• Spear Cooldown: The spear has a 3 minute 20 second cooldown. If you miss or the drake flies out of range after you throw, you’ll have to wait.
• Ability Bugs: Certain abilities can break the capture:
  • Do NOT use: Ice Block, Divine Shield, Feign Death, or similar immunity effects while the drake is attached. The quest may bug and not give credit.
  • Druids: Hibernate works and makes the wait easier, but may cause the drake to not despawn properly after turn-in.
• Drake Won’t Despawn? If the drake keeps following you after turn-in, teleporting, taking a flight path, entering an instance, or relogging will fix it.
• At Level 80: The daily quest won’t show a blue exclamation mark since it’s considered low-level. Talk to Raelorasz directly to pick it up.

Story Context

Raelorasz (quest text): “The blues have begun to cover their drakes in mysterious runes. I must discover their significance.”

<Raelorasz pokes his hand with a spear and coats the tip with his blood.>

“Take this and use it on one of them. Wait for it to become subdued, then bring it here to me before it expires. Their hatchlings feed around the northwest edge of the valley.”

Completion: “The fate of these young drakes need not burden your conscience, <race>. Malygos alone is accountable for this. I am working ceaselessly to discover the secrets of these runes. Rest assured, we shall take no more lives than we must.”

Raelorasz coats the spear tip with his own dragon blood, which is what allows it to subdue the blue drakes. He’s researching the arcane runes that Malygos has begun inscribing on his drakes, trying to understand their purpose. The captured hatchlings are dissected for this research. Raelorasz assures you that Malygos bears the moral responsibility for these deaths, but his words carry the weight of someone who knows he’s ordering the killing of young dragons for intelligence purposes.
