Quest Giver: Overlord Drakuru — Voltarus, Zul’Drak
Objective: Use the Scepter of Command on Bloated Abominations, then use their abilities at the Frigid Breach to kill 60 Drakkari Skullcrushers and lure out 3 Drakkari Chieftains.
Quick Facts
- Level: 75
- Location: The Frigid Breach, north/northeast of Voltarus. Bloated Abominations are found near the breach entrance around [32, 41]. Skullcrusher camps are clustered in the area around [32, 39].
- Chain Position: Drakuru’s task for Sabotage (from Stefan Vadu). Completing Fuel for the Fire satisfies the Drakuru portion of Sabotage. You also need to blow up 5 Scourgewagons for Stefan’s sabotage objective before turning in.
- Next Quest: Disclosure (from Drakuru)
Walkthrough
Fair warning: This quest is one of the most notoriously buggy encounters in all of WotLK. Kill credit for the abomination explosions is inconsistent. The troubleshooting section below is extensive for good reason. Read it before starting.
Preparation
- Refresh your Ensorcelled Choker disguise before heading out. If it drops mid-pull, the abomination despawns and any trolls it was tanking will turn on you.
- Dismiss any active pets (Hunters, Warlocks, Death Knights). Pet classes report significantly worse credit rates on this quest.
- Remove damage shield buffs such as Thorns, Retribution Aura, or Lightning Shield. These may interfere with kill credit.
- Leave Voltarus (you can fly down and reapply your disguise at the breach) and head to the Frigid Breach around [32, 39].
Controlling an Abomination
- While disguised, use the Scepter of Command on a Bloated Abomination near the breach entrance. You must be in disguise or the abominations will be hostile. Stand close to (or on top of) the abomination when casting. Several players report that charming from max range causes the abomination to immediately despawn or fail to properly associate kills to you.
- You’ll get a pet action bar with two abilities:
- Flatulate: AoE knockback/stun on a short cooldown. Knocks trolls down and interrupts their attacks. Useful for keeping the abomination alive while gathering more trolls.
- Burst at the Seams: Detonates the abomination, killing it and dealing massive damage to all nearby trolls. This is how you get your kills.
- If the pet bar doesn’t appear: try /console reloadui, or use CTRL+1 (Attack), CTRL+2 (Flatulate), CTRL+3 (Burst at the Seams). Bartender and similar addons can hide the bar.
The Strategy
- Send the abomination to attack Skullcrushers using the pet Attack command. As it moves through the camp, it will naturally aggro nearby trolls. Use Flatulate periodically to stun groups and reduce incoming damage to your abomination.
- Aim for groups of 8-12 trolls per abomination. You can go higher, but pulling too many can kill the abomination before you’re ready to detonate. Don’t be greedy.
- When the abomination is getting low on health (but NOT dead), it’s time to detonate. Follow these steps carefully:
- Position yourself close to the abomination (within a few yards).
- Brace yourself against a wall, fence, or terrain feature behind you. The explosion knocks you back, and flying too far away causes you to lose credit.
- If you used Flatulate recently, wait for the trolls to stand back up before detonating. Trolls still stunned/knocked down from Flatulate do not count when killed by the explosion.
- Click Burst at the Seams exactly ONCE. This is the single most consistently reported fix for the credit bug. Spamming the button causes a double-fire that voids your kills. Click it once and wait.
Chieftains
- A Drakkari Chieftain spawns at 20, 40, and 60 Skullcrusher kills. You do NOT need to kill them yourself. Drakuru’s pet gargoyle Shalewing automatically swoops down and carries each chieftain away to Voltarus. Just pause and let it happen.
Repeat
- After each explosion, return to the breach entrance, reapply your disguise if needed, and charm a fresh Bloated Abomination. Repeat until you hit 60 kills. Expect to use 5-8 abominations total if things go smoothly, more if you hit credit issues.
Troubleshooting Kill Credit
This quest has been plagued by credit bugs since launch. No single fix works 100% of the time for every player, but combining these practices gives you the best odds:
- Click Burst at the Seams only once. This is the most widely confirmed fix. Spamming the button is the #1 cause of lost credit.
- Stay close to the abomination when detonating. Stand within a few yards. If the explosion knockback sends you too far, you lose credit. Brace against terrain to prevent this.
- Don’t detonate while trolls are still stunned from Flatulate. Wait for them to stand and resume attacking.
- Some report success by NOT using Flatulate at all. If you’re consistently not getting credit, try a run where you skip Flatulate entirely and just send the abomination in, let it gather aggro, and detonate.
- Don’t change the abomination’s stance (Aggressive/Defensive/Passive) after you’ve pulled mobs. Some reports indicate stance switching mid-combat voids credit.
- Alternative approach for tanks/healers: Put the abomination on Passive and Follow. Run through camps yourself to body-pull trolls. Use Flatulate via CTRL shortcut to keep them off you, then detonate when you have a good group. Tanks and plate-wearers excel at this since you can absorb the hits while gathering.
Efficiency Tips
- While working on this quest, also complete the Scourgewagon portion of Sabotage. The Explosive Charges from Stefan need to be used on 5 Scourgewagons in the area. Knock these out between abomination runs.
- If another player is also doing this quest, team up. One person controls the abomination while the other body-pulls and gathers trolls. This dramatically speeds up the process.
- The graveyard is far from the Frigid Breach. Don’t die with a group of trolls chasing you. If your abomination dies unexpectedly, use Feign Death (Hunters), Shadowmeld (Night Elves), Vanish (Rogues), or simply run for the breach entrance until the trolls leash.
Class-Specific Tips
- Warlocks: Health Funnel works on the abomination without breaking your disguise. This lets you extend each abomination’s life significantly, pulling larger groups before detonating.
- Druids: HoTs (Rejuvenation, Lifebloom) can be cast on the abomination without breaking disguise.
- Hunters: Feign Death works in disguise if things go wrong.
- Death Knights: Dismiss your ghoul before starting. Unholy DKs report that Ghoul Frenzy works on the abomination.
- All classes: You can eat food and use bandages without breaking the disguise if trolls are hitting you directly.
Lore Context
This quest represents Drakuru’s ambition escalating. He’s no longer content with small schemes; he’s launching a full offensive against the Drakkari army north of Voltarus to capture their chieftains alive.
As he says: “Dey be fuel for da fire, mon!” The chieftains Shalewing captures here are being taken to Voltarus for conversion into Blightblood Trolls, the super-soldiers Drakuru is building for the Lich King.
You’ll see the results firsthand in the next quest, Disclosure, when Drakuru proudly gives you a tour of his upper chamber.
