The Rider of Frost

Quest 2 of 3 in the Riders of Malykriss Chain Group Quest
Both Factions • Icecrown • Level 80 • Rise of Suffering
Kill Sapph, the Rider of Frost.
Sapph stands on the ledge northeast of Malykriss at 61.9, 68.6, overlooking the Broken Front. Kill Icefury before you pull her, since the mount patrols nearby and has a habit of joining in later. After that this is the gentlest of the three. She summons nothing, drops nothing on the ground, and hits well below Rokir. Chains of Ice roots you and Hungering Cold freezes you for six seconds, and neither does damage worth worrying about. Wait them out and keep swinging.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
She said she had known he was coming, and Vereth had spent a whole briefing making sure Vikstone would not stay to hear the rest. What stayed with him afterward was Vereth admitting he would miss her laugh, and the particular smile that used to arrive just before she killed someone.

“Sapph… Sapph’s a death knight like no other. She’ll shower you with sweet words and you’ll swear that she has no evil within her heart, and then she’ll run you through without even breaking her smile. I have no fear that you’ll be able to best Sapph, but do not grow overconfident. Her strength lies in lulling her victims into a false ease, shortly before shattering them with a fierce barrage of frost attacks. Do not let your guard down, and do not underestimate her.

Be nimble, Warrior, and do not take him lightly.”

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: Vereth the Cunning — Rise of Suffering, Icecrown [54, 72]

Objective: Kill Sapph, the Rider of Frost.

Quick Facts

  • Type: Group quest (suggested 5 players), but easily soloable by most level 80 classes
  • Do Alongside: The Rider of the Unholy and The Rider of Blood (all three available simultaneously)
  • Location: Northeast of Malykriss, on a ledge overlooking the Broken Front and Mord’rethar [61.9, 68.6]
  • Unlocks: Completing all three Rider quests opens The Fate of Bloodbane
  • Phasing: Party members must be on this quest or have completed it to see you and Sapph.

Preparation

  • Kill Sapph’s mount, Icefury, before engaging. It patrols nearby and can pull independently. Some report it engaging unexpectedly during the fight if left alive.
  • Sapph is widely considered the easiest of the three Riders. Most geared level 80s can solo her without consumables.

Sapph’s Abilities

Ability Effect Counter
Melee Attacks Hits for approximately 1,200-1,500 on plate. Significantly lighter than Rokir. Standard tanking or self-healing handles this.
Chains of Ice Deals minor Frost damage and roots the target, reducing movement to zero. Movement recovers at 5% per second. Wait it out or use a freedom ability (Blessing of Freedom, shapeshifting, etc.).
Hungering Cold Freezes all enemies within 10 yards in ice for 6 seconds. Prevents all actions. Cannot be avoided if in range. Use the time after it breaks to reposition or heal.

Battle Strategy

Solo

  • This is a straightforward tank-and-spank fight for most classes. Sapph’s damage output is modest, and her abilities are manageable. She has no summoned adds and no ground AoE to dodge, making her the polar opposite of Rokir.
  • Stay on her and deal steady damage. When she freezes you with Hungering Cold or Chains of Ice, just resume attacking after it breaks. Neither ability deals significant damage on its own.
  • Players with self-healing (Death Strike, Victory Rush, Seal of Light, Recuperate) can comfortably keep themselves topped off throughout the fight.
  • Melee classes may find the Chains of Ice root mildly annoying but it doesn’t change the fight meaningfully. Ranged classes barely notice it.

Group

  • In a group, Sapph melts fast. Tank holds her, DPS burns, healer keeps people up through Hungering Cold freezes. A quick, clean kill.

Solo Tips by Class

Class Approach
Death Knight Easiest Rider by far. Frost Presence, Death Strike rotation. Army of the Dead opener if you want to be safe, but it’s overkill.
Paladin Tank spec: stand and deliver. Ret: standard rotation with self-heals. Holy: slow but safe.
Druid (Feral) Cat DPS burns her down fast. Switch to bear if you need to stabilize. Shapeshifting breaks Chains of Ice root.
Hunter Tank pet (gorilla/turtle), Mend Pet, ranged DPS. Gorilla can hold aggro for the full fight.
Mage Stand and cast. Hungering Cold interrupts briefly but you can resume immediately after. Frost spec barely notices her abilities.
Rogue Open with Garrote (she may be immune to stuns, so avoid Cheap Shot). Straightforward melee.
Warlock Voidwalker tanks, you DPS. Health Funnel as needed. Unlike Rokir, Sapph doesn’t strip HoTs.
Warrior Tank gear, standard rotation. Defensive cooldowns rarely needed.
Shaman Enhancement: standard rotation with Maelstrom Healing Waves. Elemental: nuke from range.

Lore & Secrets

Sapph, the Charming Killer

Sapph is a Darkfallen (undead blood elf) death knight who teaches Frost abilities to the Lich King’s new death knight adepts at Malykriss, paralleling Amal’thazad‘s role as the Frost instructor in Acherus.

Vereth’s description of Sapph is the most personal of the three Rider introductions. He clearly knew her well before the defection: “She’ll shower you with sweet words and you’ll swear that she has no evil within her heart, and then she’ll run you through without even breaking her smile.”

There’s an almost wistful quality to his completion dialogue: “I can’t deny, I’ll miss her laugh… and that smile that would creep onto her face just before she killed someone. A little less need to watch my back though, so I suppose I can’t complain.”

The contrast between Vereth’s warning (“Do not let your guard down, and do not underestimate her”) and the actual fight difficulty (the easiest of the three) mirrors Sapph’s own character: she lures you into underestimating her, which is exactly what Vereth is warning against.

In lore, she’s dangerous. In practice, she’s the warm-up.

“Sapph… Sapph’s a death knight like no other,” Vereth said. “She’ll shower you with sweet words and you’ll swear that she has no evil within her heart, and then she’ll run you through without even breaking her smile. I have no fear that you’ll be able to best Sapph, but do not grow overconfident. Vikstone Portrait Act 3
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

She keeps a ledge northeast of Malykriss, and what it overlooks is the Broken Front. She has been standing above the field where I finished five of our wounded, watching it, for however long she has been posted there. She teaches frost to the adepts. Darkfallen, and she rides a thing called Icefury.

I had decided on the flight over that she would not get to talk.

She was already talking.

“I knew that you would come.”

Then the ground took me. Chains of ice, and they do not break, they let you go a fraction at a time while you stand there watching her decide what to do. When I was most of the way out of them she pulled the heat out of the air within ten yards of herself and everything inside that circle stopped, including me, for six seconds that I spent entirely upright and entirely unable to move.

“You have some fight in you. I’m impressed.”

I came out of the ice and went at her and she gave ground for the first time.

“Welcome to the world of the unliving.”

She got that out while I was inside her guard. The claymore went through and she went down on the ledge with the Broken Front behind her.

“Well fought…”

Vereth heard it out.

“I can’t deny, I’ll miss her laugh… and that smile that would creep onto her face just before she killed someone. A little less need to watch my back though, so I suppose I can’t complain.”

Two of the three instructors were dead and the last one had been listening to it happen, which meant no more approaching an unsuspecting target on a quiet ledge, only whatever was left waiting for him in The Rider of Blood.
