Matthias Lehner’s Final Warning

After witnessing the Arthas vs. Illidan vision in The Hunter and the Prince, Matthias delivers his most direct and urgent message: “Now you know what you’re up against, <name>. An opponent who no longer knows pain… remorse… or humanity. An opponent who will do anything to get what he wants. The heart was his weakness and now he knows you’ve found it. If you’re going to go back for it, you’d best bring help. He will not leave it unguarded again.”

This is the last time Matthias Lehner speaks to you directly. He has shown you everything he can. The rest is up to you.

Travel to the Airship

• Fly to The Skybreaker (Alliance) or Orgrim’s Hammer (Horde). Both airships are stationary over Icecrown and marked on your map.
• Thassarian is on the main deck of The Skybreaker. Koltira Deathweaver is aboard Orgrim’s Hammer.

Turn-In Dialogue

The responses from your faction contact reveal just how staggering this information is to even veteran death knights:

• Thassarian (Alliance): “Slow down, <name>. Why don’t you start again… from the beginning?”
• Koltira (Horde): “Little kid’s ghost… Arthas’s heart… you’d better slow down… you’re making my head spin.”

Both reactions underscore the weight of what you’ve learned. Thassarian, normally composed and strategic, needs you to slow down. Koltira, famously unflappable, is openly rattled.

Lore & Secrets

The End of Matthias Lehner

This quest marks Matthias Lehner’s final appearance in the chain. He does not appear during the subsequent quests (Tirion’s Help/Argent Aid or Tirion’s Gambit). The fragment of Arthas’s humanity has done everything it can: it showed you how the Lich King built his army, how he defeated Illidan, and why he discarded his heart. The rest falls to Tirion Fordring and the living.

Matthias’s parting words contain a veiled suggestion that may or may not be sincere: “If you’re going to go back for it, you’d best bring help.”

This leads directly to Tirion’s plan to recover the heart and use it to redeem Arthas. Whether Matthias genuinely wants Arthas saved, or is simply manipulating events, is intentionally ambiguous.

He has not aged well in the technical sense. Blizzard updated his model in patch 8.0.1, a decade after he was added in 3.0.2, which means the ghost of Arthas’s humanity has outlasted several of the systems he was built on.

The Yogg-Saron Theory

A persistent player theory holds that Matthias Lehner may not be Arthas’s humanity at all, but rather an illusion created by Yogg-Saron, the Old God imprisoned beneath Northrend.

The reasoning: Matthias’s guidance leads players to bring the heart to Tirion, who ultimately destroys it, permanently removing the Lich King’s last vulnerability. If Matthias were truly trying to help, why lead events toward the destruction of the one thing that could weaken Arthas?

The theory gained traction because Yogg-Saron’s influence permeates Icecrown’s saronite structures, and the Old God’s motives in the Brain of Yogg-Saron encounter in Ulduar involve manipulating mortal perceptions of historical events. This remains unconfirmed speculation, but it adds an unsettling layer to the entire chain.

Cross-Expansion Connections

• Tirion’s Gambit (WotLK): The immediate follow-up chain where Tirion Fordring infiltrates the Cathedral of Darkness to recover the heart before the Scourge can destroy it. Upon looking into the heart, Tirion concludes no humanity remains and destroys it with the Ashbringer, weakening the Lich King. The Knights of the Ebon Blade led by Darion Mograine rescue Tirion before the Lich King can retaliate.
• Icecrown Citadel Raid (WotLK): Tirion’s confrontation with the Lich King at the Frozen Throne serves as the final payoff for this chain. The knowledge gained through Matthias informs the entire assault strategy. Tirion’s role in shattering Frostmourne during the encounter directly follows from his experience with the heart.
• Shadowlands (2020): The question of whether any remnant of Arthas’s humanity survived was answered definitively when his soul appeared as a faint wisp in the Maw, too diminished to even speak, before fading permanently.
