“How kind… how generous our lord-commander is. Where he is flowers and sunshine, I am filled only with hatred. It is not enough to end their miserable lives… I want them humiliated… debased! What could be more unspeakable than to be turned into that which you hate? To dedicate your existence to eradicating a thing, and then in the end to become it?
How sad.
Take this tincture northwest to Onslaught Harbor. Apply it to their still corpses and watch what happens, but avoid the cathedral.”

Setaal Darkmender’s Character
Setaal is one of the more memorable minor quest givers in Icecrown. She’s a draenei death knight, which is an uncommon combination lorewise (draenei death knights were created when Acherus forces killed and raised heroes of all races during the Scarlet Enclave campaign).
She keeps two chained ghouls at her side and delivers her quest dialogue with sadistic relish, contrasting herself against Lord-Commander Arete’s comparatively businesslike demeanor. Her dialogue drips with contempt for the Onslaught, calling the act of turning them into undead “humiliating” and “debasing” rather than a tactical necessity.
The Irony of Raising the Scarlet Dead
The Scarlet Onslaught’s entire identity revolves around destroying the undead, viewing them as abominations. Being raised as ghouls by the very death knights they sought to exterminate is presented by Setaal not as a military tactic but as a deliberate act of defilement.
This mirrors the broader Ebon Blade philosophy in Icecrown: the death knights haven’t just broken free of the Scourge, they’ve adopted its methods against their enemies with full moral clarity about what they’re doing.
Alliance players in particular are essentially helping undead death knights raise dead humans as ghouls.

Vikstone's War Journal“How kind… how generous our lord-commander is. Where he is flowers and sunshine, I am filled only with hatred.”

Flowers and sunshine. Yesterday that man told me the Argent Crusade were fools for leaving these people breathing and that his order does not consider them worthy of existence.
“It is not enough to end their miserable lives… I want them humiliated… debased! What could be more unspeakable than to be turned into that which you hate? To dedicate your existence to eradicating a thing, and then in the end to become it? How sad.”
She was talking about the Scarlets.
“Take this tincture northwest to Onslaught Harbor. Apply it to their still corpses and watch what happens, but avoid the cathedral.”
She did not say why about the cathedral. The bottle had a label on it. Darkmender’s Tincture. Somebody had gone to the trouble of labeling it.
Onslaught Harbor was lit as it always is. The defenders were working in practiced formations, sweeping the ground for corrupted flesh, which is the entire reason any of them came north.
I came out of the dark and the first patrol was down before anyone raised anything, and then the tincture went onto them.
It does not take long. The bone goes first and you hear it, and then the skin, and what stands up out of a Scarlet crusader afterward is still wearing the tabard. They make a noise while they do it.
After that there was no reason to keep working quietly. Their own comrades came across the yard at them with their hands out, and then those comrades came apart, and the tincture went onto them as well. Ten of them, which was all the bottle held.
By the end the harbour had a new kind of congregation in it.
The draenei death knight fixed me with a cold stare, her eyes dead as the grave. A sly grin crept across her features. “I’ll have more of the tincture prepared tomorrow. Until then, be well.”
Paper and corpses were errands, and the first thing Arete actually wants from that harbor is the fleet itself, which puts Vikstone in the Blood in the Water.
