Demolishing Megalith

Quest 3 of 3 in the March of the Giants Chain (Finale) Group Quest
Both Factions • Howling Fjord • Level 72 • Fort Wildervar
Defeat Megalith at Frostblade Peak and return to the quest giver.
Researcher Aderan at Fort Wildervar (Alliance) or Sage Edan at Camp Winterhoof (Horde). Megalith patrols Frostblade Peak around [67, 10] to [69, 11], north of Giants' Run, as a level 71 Elite with roughly 28k health. Important: Always fight uphill from him, because his Hulking Uppercut launches you airborne and a downhill or cliff-edge position means lethal fall damage. If you still have your Rune of Command stone giant pet, let it tank for a trivial fight.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Megalith towered against the white expanse of Frostblade Peak, his runes blazing with a complexity that dwarfed every giant Vikstone had fought before. He fell, but his dying words carried a name that left Aderan staring north toward peaks they couldn't see.

“Binder Murdis created Megalith to be the most powerful of the runed giants and to lead them in their mission. Defeating Megalith will leave them lost and without direction. After the expeditionary force arrives, our soldiers will be able to isolate and defeat the remaining giants and oust their Iron Dwarf masters from their camps.

Search the foothills of Frostblade Peak, north of Giants’ Run for Megalith and defeat him!”

-Researcher Aderan

Objective

LEVEL

72

Requires level

69

Defeat Megalith and return to Researcher Aderan at Fort Wildervar.

Location:
Megalith patrols the snowy area at 68.8, 11.2.

Strategies:
Rune of Command: If you haven’t turned in The Rune of Command, use the rune to summon a Stone Giant pet. It can tank Megalith, making the fight trivial.
Soloing Tips:
Mages: Use slows like Frostbolt or Arcane Slow to kite him effectively. Even at level 71, it’s easily manageable.
Other Classes: Be cautious of Megalith’s knockback. Fight facing downhill to avoid being pushed off the mountain and taking fall damage.
Knockback Warning:
Megalith’s knockback ability can deal significant fall damage if you’re near an edge or uphill. Position yourself strategically during the fight.
Respawn Timer:
Megalith respawns approximately every 2 minutes, making it easy to retry if necessary.
Difficulty:
Megalith has roughly 27k health and hits similarly to the Runed Stone Giants from March of the Giants. Proper positioning and preparation can make this quest soloable by most level-appropriate players.
Megalith patrols Frostblade Peak around [67, 10] to [69, 11], north of Giants’ Run, as a level 71 Elite with roughly 28k health.

Walkthrough

Quest Giver (Horde): Sage Edan — Camp Winterhoof, Howling Fjord [48, 13]

Quest Giver (Alliance): Researcher Aderan — Fort Wildervar, Howling Fjord [60, 16]

Objective: Defeat Megalith and return to the quest giver.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Frostblade Peak, north of Giants’ Run. Megalith patrols the snowy hillside from approximately [65, 10] to [69, 11].
  • Suggested Players: 3 (but very soloable; see below)
  • Chain Position: 3 of 3 (March of the Giants → The Lodestone → Demolishing Megalith)
  • Counts toward: I’ve Toured the Fjord (105 quests Horde/130 quests Alliance)

Walkthrough

Getting There

  • From Giants’ Run, head north into the snowy foothills of Frostblade Peak. Megalith patrols a path along the hillside around [67, 10] to [69, 11], near a cave entrance. If you don’t see him, wait briefly. He moves slowly.

The Fight

  • Megalith is a level 71 Elite mountain giant with roughly 28k health. Despite being the chain’s final boss, he’s significantly easier than the Runed Stone Giants from March of the Giants. He does not have the stacking Dark Rune DoT that makes those earlier giants so dangerous.
  • His two abilities:
    • Boulder: Ranged physical attack. Not a major threat.
    • Hulking Uppercut: Melee knockback that launches you into the air. This is the real danger, not because of the hit itself, but because of where you land.
  • Critical positioning tip: Fight Megalith while standing uphill from him. When Hulking Uppercut launches you, you’ll land on the slope above with little or no fall damage. If you fight with a cliff edge or downhill slope behind you, the knockback can send you flying off the mountain for lethal fall damage.

Efficiency Tips

  • Rune of Command pet: If you still haven’t turned in The Rune of Command (as recommended in the previous two walkthroughs), your Stone Giant pet trivializes this fight. Let it tank, wait for it to build threat, then add your damage. The pet’s frequent stuns keep Megalith locked down.
  • Megalith is rootable, kiteable, and slowed normally. Ranged classes can stay at distance and avoid Hulking Uppercut entirely.
  • He cannot be feared.
  • If you die or fail, he respawns quickly.
  • Watch for Icehollow Behemoths in the area. They can respawn on top of you mid-fight.

Lore Context

  • When Megalith dies, he yells: “I have fallen! Fear not, brethren! Let nothing keep you from the Stoneforge!” The Stoneforge is never fully explained in Howling Fjord, but the name carries weight. Binder Murdis created Megalith as a keystone to lead the enslaved giants northwest toward this unknown destination.
  • The iron dwarves themselves were forged by Loken in the Forge of Wills at Ulduar, and their rune-binding of stone giants is an early glimpse of the titan-forged conflict that escalates through Grizzly Hills (Thor Modan, Dun Argol) and culminates in the Storm Peaks.

Cross-Expansion Connections

Iron Dwarves After WotLK

  • By the time of Exploring Azeroth: Northrend, the iron dwarves have re-entered service of the titan Keepers following Loken’s death and Yogg-Saron’s defeat. Thor Modan remains in ruins, but the iron dwarves now work alongside earthen, frost giants, and mechagnomes as part of Ulduar’s defenses.
  • During the Legion invasion, iron dwarves helped defend Ulduar against demons, and the iron dwarf Dvalen Ironrune joined Odyn’s Valarjar.
  • The irony is worth mentioning: the “stone” earthen-turned-dwarves built the “Iron” Forge, while the “iron” dwarves seek the “Stone” forge.

“Binder Murdis created Megalith to be the most powerful of the runed giants and to lead them in their mission,” Aderan said. “Defeating Megalith will leave them lost and without direction.”

Murdis was already dead by my hand but his creation marched on.

“After the expeditionary force arrives, our soldiers will be able to isolate and defeat the remaining giants and oust their Iron Dwarf masters from their camps. Search the foothills of Frostblade Peak, north of Giants’ Run for Megalith and defeat him!”

I found him against the white expanse of Frostblade’s slopes. Megalith made the runed giants I’d fought before look like children’s toys. He towered against the sky, runes blazing across his stone flesh in patterns more complex than anything the other giants bore. Where they had been summoned, he had been crafted. Murdis’s masterwork.

The first blow cratered the frozen ground as I rolled downslope, using the terrain, knowing I couldn’t match him strength for strength. His fist followed, and the mountainside shook.

I targeted his knee joint. My mace connected and sparks flew, and his backhand caught me across the chest, sending me skidding through snow until I hit a boulder hard enough to see stars.

He advanced. Slow. Certain.

Megalith’s roar echoed across the peaks as he toppled. But as the light faded from his eyes, he spoke. Words that shouldn’t have come from stone.

“I have fallen! Fear not, brethren! Let nothing keep you from the Stoneforge!”

The Stoneforge.

Aderan’s hand stopped over his notes when I reported it.

“You’re sure he said the Stoneforge?” He shook his head slowly. “I know of no place with that name, but it sounds like a word with origins in the titans. What plans do the Iron Dwarves have for such a thing?”

He stared north, toward peaks we couldn’t see from here.

“This bears watching. We must find it before the Iron Dwarves’ plan comes to fruition.”

Trapper Jethan’s snares on the slopes below the fort had caught something, though whatever took the bait was not staying in them, which is what comes of Preying Upon the Weak.
