Take Their Rear!

Objective: Collect 8 Grizzly Flanks from Grizzly Bears in Grizzly Hills.

Walkthrough

• Anderhol explains that the stag population won’t sustain the lodge on its own, and it’s time to hunt the zone’s namesake grizzlies. They’re plentiful along the rivers and streams throughout the area.
• Grizzly Bears are aggressive, so watch your pulls. They hit harder than the passive stags from the previous quest.
• Best farming areas:
  • [40, 58] — Along the river just west of Amberpine Lodge. 8-10 bears with quick respawns.
  • [29, 58] — Slightly further upriver, another cluster of 8-10 bears.
  • [30, 45] — Where the river forks southwest of Blue Sky Logging Grounds. Quieter area with 4-6 bears.
  • [38, 67] — Southern area near Forest’s Edge Post. 5-6 bears with fast respawns. Also overlaps with Silverbrook Hunters if you still need A Swift Response.
• Ursus Maulers at Ursoc’s Den also drop Grizzly Flanks, though that’s out of your way for this quest.

Do Alongside

• Troll Season! — Also unlocked by completing Replenishing the Storehouse. You’ll be heading into the surrounding wilderness anyway, so pick it up before leaving.
• If you’re following the river northwest toward bears, you’ll pass through the area for Just Passing Through (collecting Blackroot Stalks along the riverbank around [29, 56]).

Efficiency Tips

• The drop rate for Grizzly Flanks is notoriously poor. They range roughly 20% to 50%, so budget 15-30+ kills for 8 flanks.
• Follow the river north from the lodge. One effective loop: start at [29, 58], work up to the waterfalls, explore each fork, then circle back by the time the first bears have respawned.
• Skinners will benefit from this grind. You can earn stacks of Borean Leather and a chance at Arctic Fur from the extended farming.

Lore Note

If you watch the bears before engaging them, you’ll notice they fish for Rainbow Trout in the river. Attack one mid-catch and it’ll charge you with the live trout still in its mouth. You can target and kill the trout (which makes the bear very unhappy), and its body will remain on the ground afterward, though it can’t be looted.

It’s a fun bit of environmental animation that reinforces Anderhol’s quest text about the bears being “well fed from the abundant fish that swim in these streams.”

The quest title, “Take Their Rear,” refers to bear flanks (the rear cut of meat), but it’s also a sly nod to the classic MMO joke about “bear ass” collection quests.
