“We need more weapons in the fight against the Scourge. The natural properties of the Emerald Dragonshrine to the southeast may be the answer. Any unliving creature, save those that Sylvanas has redeemed, that steps foot in the dragonshrine falls to dust. I want to test a theory, and I want you to be my instrument in doing so, young Night Elf.
Go to the Emerald Dragonshrine and take the seeds from the emerald lashers therein.”

Lore Context
Lord Itharius is the green dragonflight’s ambassador to the Wyrmrest Accord and the brother of Eranikus, consort of Ysera.
Players who ran Sunken Temple in Classic may recognize him from his cave in the Swamp of Sorrows, where he sent adventurers to deal with Eranikus’s corruption.
The Emerald Dragonshrine’s protective magic disintegrates undead on contact. Itharius wants to weaponize this property via the lasher seeds against the Scourge, which is the setup for the chain’s second quest.
The quest text specifies that Sylvanas’s Forsaken are exempt from disintegration, but Death Knights (also undead) walk through the shrine unaffected. Thislore inconsistency has been reported about since launch.

Vikstone's War JournalLord Itharius found me between tasks at Wyrmrest. The green flight’s ambassador had a request.

“We need more weapons in the fight against the Scourge. The natural properties of the Emerald Dragonshrine to the southeast may be the answer. Any unliving creature that steps foot into the dragonshrine falls to dust. I want to test a theory. Go to the shrine and take the seeds from the emerald lashers therein.”
The Emerald Dragonshrine broke every rule the rest of Dragonblight followed. It was green where everything else was white and grey. Vines pulsed with verdant light, and at the shrine’s heart, I glimpsed something that stopped me cold: Ysera herself, transparent and dreaming, suspended between worlds.
My people have walked the edges of the Dream for millennia. Standing in that place felt like coming home to a house I’d never visited.
The lashers disagreed with my presence. The shrine’s defenders had been ordered to attack anyone not of the green flight, and they obeyed with thorned enthusiasm.
The seeds were life, concentrated into something that could unmake death itself. Even severed from their parent plants, they radiated a warmth that had nothing to do with temperature.
Itharius received them. “Even now I can feel the pulse of nature from within these seeds. We must put them to good use.”
If the shrine’s magic unmade the undead on contact then the seeds might carry it past the borders, and testing it means walking them into Scourge ground, because That Which Creates Can Also Destroy.
