A Righteous Sermon

Alliance • Dragonblight • Level 73 • Wintergarde Keep
Watch Inquisitor Hallard's interrogation of Mayor Godfrey, then report the intelligence to Wyrmbane.
Inquisitor Hallard in the Wintergarde Keep prison at [77, 46]. Accept the quest and the RP scene begins automatically. Important: You must stay in the prison for the entire scene (several minutes). Leaving the area before the dialogue finishes voids your progress. The quest tracker updates to "Righteous Sermon Heard" only after the final lines. On busy servers, only the player whose name Hallard speaks gets credit. If another player's scene is already running, wait for it to finish, then trigger your own. After the scene, report to Wyrmbane at [78, 48].
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Hallard called it a sermon. Holy fire is still fire. Godfrey screamed until he broke, and what spilled out changed the war: a mausoleum beneath Wintergarde Village, a lich named Thel'zan hiding in their own crypt, and a reason Naxxramas chose this exact location.

“Godfrey Goodard, once a righteous man and mayor of Wintergarde, is now an agent of the Scourge. His transformation from man to undying ghoul has taken place slowly, over time. He hears the call of the Lich King now and lives only to serve his master. But as with all Scourge, Godfrey knows the language of death and with proper motivation, will tell us what we need to know about the tome.

Once you hear what you need to hear, return to the High Commander at the front lines. I’ll clean up here as needed.”

-Inquisitor Hallard

Quest Giver: Inquisitor Hallard — Wintergarde Keep prison (barracks basement), approximately [77, 46], Dragonblight

Turn In: High Commander Halford Wyrmbane — Wintergarde Keep [78, 48], Dragonblight

Objective: Wait for Inquisitor Hallard to finish his Righteous Sermon. Then return to Wyrmbane.

Quick Facts

  • Faction: Alliance only
  • Quest Level: 73
  • Chain Position: Follows Understanding the Language of Death. This is the climax of the Thel’zan investigation arc. The next quest in the broader Wrathgate chain is Into Hostile Territory (after also completing the parallel Demo-gnome/mine chain).

Walkthrough

You should already be in the prison after turning in Understanding the Language of Death. Accept this quest from Hallard. The interrogation RP event begins automatically.

Hallard’s “Righteous Sermon” is an extended scene lasting several minutes. He confronts Mayor Godfrey (the ghoulified former mayor of Wintergarde) and uses the Light to extract information about the Flesh-bound Tome. You must remain in the prison and watch the entire scene play out.

The quest tracker will update to “Righteous Sermon Heard” only after the final lines of dialogue.

Once the scene completes, Hallard dismisses you to report to Wyrmbane. Head back up the stairs and north to the Keep to turn in. Wyrmbane reacts to the intelligence with urgency, dispatching Duke August Foehammer and Ambo Cash to the front lines.

Tips

  • You must stay for the entire scene. Leaving the area before the dialogue finishes will void your progress. The event is lengthy (several minutes), so settle in.
  • WotLK Classic bottleneck: This quest was a major pain point on busy Classic servers. Only the player whose name Hallard speaks in the opening line receives credit. On crowded servers, players reported waiting over an hour for their turn. Grouping can help, but it is inconsistent. If others are waiting, try grouping up and triggering the event together. Alternatively, try during off-peak hours.
  • Hallard does not initiate the event if another player’s version is already running. If you arrive and the dialogue is already in progress, that instance belongs to someone else. You need to wait for it to finish, then trigger your own.

The Interrogation Scene (Summary)

The scene unfolds in three phases:

Phase 1: Defiance. Hallard asks Godfrey directly what the tome says. Godfrey refuses, taunting: “Tell you nothing, preacher. What can you do to me that Kel’Thuzad has not? That the Lich King will not?” He insists the book is the Alliance’s salvation but promises they’ll learn nothing.

Phase 2: The Sermon. Hallard begins channeling the Light directly into Godfrey’s undead flesh. The Light burns him, and Godfrey screams in agony. Hallard invokes phrases like “LET THE LIGHT IN, GODFREY GODDARD!” until Godfrey breaks.

Phase 3: Confession. Godfrey reveals critical intelligence:

  • The tome describes a coming apocalypse (Hallard dismisses this as propaganda).
  • Under further pressure, Godfrey reveals the real prize: a hidden mausoleum exists beneath Wintergarde Village. This is why Naxxramas targeted Wintergarde specifically. Thel’zan the Duskbringer hides in this mausoleum, raising a “thousand-thousand corpses” against the Keep.
  • Godfrey warns that Thel’zan “bears the dark gift, bestowed upon him by the Lich King himself” and cannot be stopped.
  • Hallard cuts him off: “You let us worry about how we kill the bastard, Godfrey.”

After dismissing you, Hallard ominously tells Godfrey he’ll now be shown “the rarely shown option three,” and the scene ends.

Lore & Story Context

This is one of the standout quest moments in all of Dragonblight, and arguably one of the most memorable RP events in WotLK. The scene works on multiple levels.

Narratively, it delivers the critical revelation that drives the rest of the Wintergarde storyline: there’s a mausoleum beneath the village, Thel’zan is hiding in it, and Naxxramas was sent to Wintergarde specifically because of it. This reframes the entire siege. Wintergarde wasn’t just a target of opportunity; it was chosen because the Scourge needed access to its buried dead and its underground infrastructure.

Hallard’s description of Godfrey is worth noting: “Godfrey Goddard, once a righteous man and mayor of Wintergarde, is now an agent of the Scourge. His transformation from man to undying ghoul has taken place slowly, over time.”

This slow transformation, rather than a sudden death and reanimation, is a relatively uncommon detail in WoW’s Scourge lore. It suggests Godfrey was corrupted while still alive, gradually losing his humanity until only the ghoul remained.

Wyrmbane’s completion dialogue sets up the next phase of the war: “Duke August Foehammer and Ambo Cash will be dispatched to the front lines in preparation for our next assault.”

He also confirms the intelligence will be sent to Bolvar Fordragon at the Wrathgate, tying this local investigation directly to the zone’s ultimate climax.

Easter Eggs

  • The Exorcist (1973): Hallard’s interrogation closely mirrors the exorcism scenes from William Friedkin’s horror classic. His line “May the power of Light compel you!” directly echoes Father Merrin’s iconic “The power of Christ compels you!” The use of holy power to force a possessed/corrupted being to speak the truth, the escalating intensity, and the subject’s physical torment are all deliberate parallels.
  • The Crucible/Salem witch trials (possible): There are parallels to Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, where Reverend Hale (Hallard?) interrogates prisoners in a jail about a devil’s book. The setting (a jail cell), the religious authority figure, the accused, and the book all line up.
  • Halo (possible): Wyrmbane’s completion dialogue names two officers: Duke August Foehammer and Ambo Cash. In Bungie’s Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), Foehammer is the callsign of the Pelican pilot Echo 419, and the UNSC frigate In Amber Clad is a key vessel in Halo 2. “Ambo Cash” could be a loose play on “Amber Clad.”

Hallard gave Godfrey a choice. The mayor chose defiance, hissing through broken teeth: “What can you do to me that Kel’Thuzad has not? That the Lich King will not?”

Hallard smiled. “Then it is option two.” He said a prayer for the lost soul, and then the Light answered his call in ways the hymns never mention. Holy fire is still fire. It burned, and Godfrey screamed, and I watched the thing that had been a man writhe against his chains.

When Hallard threatened a holy water bath, Godfrey broke. The words spilled out like bile: a mausoleum beneath Wintergarde Village. That was why Naxxramas attacked that precise location. Thel’zan the Duskbringer hid in their own crypt, sending a thousand-thousand corpses against the keep’s walls. The lich was human once, Godfrey shrieked. Born of mortal flesh, now protected by the Lich King himself.

The intelligence was valuable. I should have focused on that.

Instead, I noticed how each scream sent something like satisfaction through me. This darkness grows not through grand gestures, but through small pleasures in the suffering of those who deserve it.

Hallard promised Godfrey “option three” as I climbed the stairs. I did not look back.

The walk to Wyrmbane was long, not because of guilt.

Godfrey’s confession gave them the mausoleum, and Wintergarde was keeping older secrets than that, since a scrying orb in the town square carried Imprints on the Past from long before the siege, ending at a cavern with a sword in the ice.
