“Now that you can speak with the Winterfin, it is time for you to let them get to know you. One of the best ways to do that is to conduct business with them. The murlocs prize clams over any other object and their only surviving merchant is Ahlurglgr. If I were you, I’d collect a handful of Winterfin clams and give them to him as a gift. The clams can be found all over down in the trench, as well as across it in the Winterfin village and their caverns.”
<Words in a strange language flood your head, but you have no difficulty recalling them.>
-King Mrgl-Mrgl
You will be able to choose one of these rewards:
Upon completion of this quest you will gain:
Quest Giver: King Mrgl-Mrgl at Winterfin Retreat [44, 23]
Turn In: Ahlurglgr at Winterfin Retreat [43, 14]
Objective: Collect 5 Winterfin Clams and deliver them to Ahlurglgr.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
Clams can be found both on the ground and as drops from Winterfin murlocs. Ground spawns are far more efficient.
Ground Spawn Strategy (Recommended):
Start at [41, 18] and move north through the murloc encampments. Clams appear as small objects that sparkle like standard quest items. Look for them:
Helpful Tip: Three clams sit directly behind Ahlurglgr at Winterfin Retreat. These serve as excellent reference examples for what you’re looking for, though the ones in the wild are somewhat smaller.
Drop Method (Inefficient):
Clams can be dropped by Winterfin murlocs, but the drop rate is low. Don’t rely on this method.
If Spawns Are Scarce:
During busy periods, ground spawns may be heavily contested. If the main camp around [41, 18] is crowded, venture further north or south along the coast, or check the underwater trench and Winterfin Caverns.
Underwater Collection
Clams can also be found in the trench (the underwater rift between Winterfin Retreat and Winterfin Village). If you choose this route:
Most players find surface collection faster, but the trench is a viable alternative if the village is overcrowded.
Story Context: Building Trust Through Commerce
King Mrgl-Mrgl’s instruction: “Now that you can speak with the Winterfin, it is time for you to let them get to know you. One of the best ways to do that is to conduct business with them.”
You’ve learned to understand the Winterfin murlocs through magical means, but understanding their language doesn’t automatically mean they trust you. Mrgl-Mrgl suggests the universal language: commerce.
“The murlocs prize clams over any other object and their only surviving merchant is Ahlurglgr. If I were you, I’d collect a handful of Winterfin clams and give them to him as a gift.”
Clams serve as currency in Winterfin society. By bringing clams to their merchant, you’re demonstrating you understand and respect their economic system.
Ahlurglgr’s reaction upon receiving your gift: “What’s this? Who are you? You’re one of those <race> things! How can you speak our tongue? These are for me? Is this some sort of <race> trick? No? Well then, thank you! Come back any time that you have more clams, and we’ll do business!”
His suspicion is understandable. His people have been run out of their home by mind-controlled kin, and now a strange outsider approaches, speaking perfect murloc. But clams are clams, and business is business.
Lore: Murloc Economics
Completing this quest unlocks Ahlurglgr as a vendor. He’s described as the “only surviving merchant” of the Winterfin tribe, essentially their quartermaster. He sells valuable crafting materials in exchange for Winterfin Clams:
Jewelcrafters need these materials, making clam farming a potential gold source. Some players continue collecting clams long after completing the quest specifically to trade with Ahlurglgr.
Cross-Expansion: King Mrgl-Mrgl’s Legacy
The “king” giving you this quest is actually a night elf named Mrgl-Mrgl, an agent of D.E.H.T.A. (Druids for the Ethical and Humane Treatment of Animals) who wears a full Murloc Costume at all times. He originally came to observe the Winterfin murlocs from a distance, but circumstances forced him into leadership.
Mrgl-Mrgl returns in later expansions:
His dedication to murloc welfare (while dressed as one) remains a running gag across multiple expansions.

Vikstone's War Journal“Now that you can speak with the Winterfin, it is time for them to get to know you,” Mrgl-Mrgl said. “The best way to do that is to conduct business with them. The murlocs prize clams over any other object, and their only surviving merchant is Ahlurglgr. Collect some clams and give them to him as a gift.”

Clam diplomacy?
I gathered five Winterfin clams from the trench floor, each one the size of my fist. Whatever value they held in murloc society, they looked unremarkable to me. But I wasn’t the one being courted.
Ahlurglgr regarded me with bulging eyes. “What’s this? Who are you? You’re one of those elf things!” He circled me warily. “How can you speak our tongue? These are for me? Is this some sort of elf trick?”
I assured him it wasn’t.
“Well then, thank you!” he said. “Come back any time you have more clams, and we’ll do business!”
Five clams had apparently bought me a murloc friend.
Ahlurglgr trusted him now, and the rest of the Winterfin had a worse problem than trade, because their tadpoles were gone and something in the old village had them, so Oh Noes, the Tadpoles!
