Objective: Collect 6 Frozen Iron Scraps by using Essence of Ice on Smoldering Scraps at the former site of Fjorn’s Anvil.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Farm Essence of Ice

• Fly east from Dun Niffelem to Frostfield Lake around [70, 60].
• Kill Brittle Revenants until you have at least 6 Essence of Ice. The drop rate is high in WotLK Classic. Grab a couple extra in case one misfires.
• Important: Only Brittle Revenants drop Essence of Ice. The Seething Revenants nearby do not.

Step 2: Locate Smoldering Scraps

• Head further east (slightly southeast) to the Fjorn’s Anvil subzone around [74, 63]. This is the lava-scarred area where the anvil originally sat before you moved it to Dun Niffelem, not the anvil’s current location. Your minimap will read “Fjorn’s Anvil” when you’re in the right spot.
• Smoldering Scraps are small black spikes with gray smoke rising from them. They’re easy to spot in the surrounding snow but much harder to see on the dark, scorched ground near the lava.

Step 3: Freeze and Loot

• Stand within about 10 yards of a Smoldering Scrap and use an Essence of Ice from your inventory. The Essence launches toward a nearby Scrap, freezing it into a lootable Frozen Iron Scrap.
• Right-click the Frozen Iron Scrap to loot it. Repeat six times.
• Warning: Frozen Iron Scraps can be looted by any player on the quest, not just the one who froze them. Watch for ninja looters, especially during peak hours.

Step 4: Turn In

• Return to Fjorn’s Anvil in Dun Niffelem [63, 63] to complete the quest. Any remaining Essence of Ice in your bags will be removed on turn-in.

Efficiency Tips

• Dismount first. Using an Essence while mounted consumes the charge but does nothing. Same goes for being in combat.
• Don’t trust the targeting. The Essence does not always fly to the closest Scrap. It can target one 10+ yards behind you instead. Watch the trajectory so you know where to loot.
• Let the Essence find them for you. If you can’t spot Scraps on the dark ground, spam the Essence use button while running through the area. If one is within range, the Essence will reveal its location.
• Druids: You can use a macro to cast Essence of Ice and immediately re-enter Flight Form, letting you grab scraps without dismounting in contested areas.
• Bonus gold: Brittle Revenants can be mined after looting, yielding Crystallized Earth. Kill a few Seething Revenants while you’re in the area for Crystallized Fire as well. Both sell well on the Auction House.
• Do Alongside: Complete all three Friendly-tier Sons of Hodir dailies in one loop: A Viscous Cleaning (cave west of Dun Niffelem), Hot and Cold (east toward Frostfield Lake), and Hodir’s Call (Thunderfall to the northeast).

Lore Context

The Smoldering Scraps are shrapnel from the battle at Fjorn’s Anvil during the Sons of Hodir quest chain. By cooling and recovering this iron, you’re both clearing the battlefield and supplying the frost giants with raw materials, reinforcing Thorim’s renewed alliance with his former followers.

This quest was once the single most-completed quest in all of World of Warcraft, according to Blizzard’s official “Top Lists” page during the WotLK era. Every raider in the game needed Sons of Hodir shoulder enchants, and this daily was available from Friendly onward, making it the first and most repeated daily in the grind to Exalted.

WotLK Classic vs. Original WotLK

• Patch 3.3.0 increased the requirement from 5 Frozen Iron Scraps to 6.
• Patch 3.3.0 removed the Shield Slam ability from Brittle Revenants, making them significantly less annoying for casters (it previously caused a 5-second spell lock).
• Essence of Ice drop rates appear improved in WotLK Classic compared to the original (~31% rate reported during original WotLK).
• Patch 3.3.0 also increased Sons of Hodir daily quest reputation gains by ~30%.
