“The spirit world has fallen under the sway of the Lich King. Fearsome creatures made of pure nightmare now stand watch over the realm of the elements. I sense that these val’kyr are guarding a terrible secret.
I am too old and weak to survive another journey. You must go in my place, Vikstone.
Take this incense burner to Wyrmskull Village and use it to enter the spirit world. Find the large dwelling in the northeast! Avoid the val’kyr at all costs lest they make you a permanent fixture in their world.”

The Vision: Dialogue
Ancient Male Vrykul says: So then we too are cursed?
Ancient Male Vrykul points to the infant.
Ancient Female Vrykul sobs.
Ancient Male Vrykul says: The gods have forsaken us! We must dispose of it before Ymiron is notified!
Ancient Female Vrykul says: NO! You cannot! I beg of you! It is our child!
Ancient Male Vrykul says: Then what are we to do, wife? The others cannot find out. Should they learn of this aberration, we will all be executed.
Ancient Female Vrykul says: I… I will hide it. I will hide it until I find it a home, far away from here…
Avoid the Val’kyr Soulclaimers
While in the spirit world, Val’kyr Soulclaimers patrol the area. These nightmare creatures serve the Lich King and guard the spirit realm. If they spot you or you engage them in any way, they’ll knock you out of the spirit world immediately.
Clear any living vrykul around the building before using the incense, then carefully avoid the val’kyr patrols while in spirit form.
Optional Encounter: The Lich King
One of WotLK’s most memorable easter eggs awaits players brave (or foolish) enough to approach the Lich King while in the spirit world. He appears near the building at approximately [58, 48], looming over the village.
If you get within range, he’ll grip you with an unbreakable stun and deliver a chilling monologue:
The Lich King grins.
The Lich King says: Shamanism has brought you here… Its scent permeates the air. *laughs* I was once a shaman.
Val’kyr Soulclaimer says: Shall we prepare it for you, my lord?
The Lich King says: No, minion. This one is not ready.
The Lich King says: Do you feel it, mortal? Death seeps through me, enveloping all that I touch. With just a snap of my finger your soul will languish in damnation for all eternity.
The Lich King says: But… It is not yet your time to serve the Lich King. Yes, a greater destiny awaits you. Power… You must become more powerful before you are to serve me.
The Lich King says: Now watch, val’kyr. Observe as I apply pressure. Can you see that it is not yet ripe? Watch as it pops and falls lifeless to the floor.
He then kills you instantly. The corpse run is mercifully short, and there’s no durability damage from this death. Many players consider this encounter worth experiencing at least once for the lore and voice acting.
If you return and approach him again after resurrecting, he’ll express irritation at your “persistence or stupidity” before killing you once more.
Troubleshooting
Lore Significance: The Origin of Humanity Revealed
This quest delivers one of Warcraft’s most significant lore revelations. The “aberration” the vrykul couple discusses is their own child, born weak and small compared to normal vrykul. This infant represents one of the first humans, the result of the Curse of Flesh affecting the vrykul race.
The curse, inflicted by the Old Gods to undo the Titans’ work, caused some vrykul children to be born “malformed” in their parents’ eyes. King Ymiron decreed all such children be killed to preserve vrykul bloodlines. But as this vision shows, some parents defied that order, hiding their children and eventually smuggling them far from Northrend.
These exiled infants and their descendants would become the human race.
When you return to Thoralius with this information, even the wise shaman is confused: he knew the vrykul only as recent threats, not as the ancient progenitors of humanity.
Lore Deep Dive: “I Was Once a Shaman”
The Lich King’s cryptic statement about being “once a shaman” references his dual nature. The entity on the Frozen Throne is a fusion of two beings:
Ner’zhul: An orc elder shaman and chieftain of the Shadowmoon clan on Draenor. After attempting to escape through portals at the end of the Second War, he was captured by the demon lord Kil’jaeden, who destroyed his body but preserved his spirit. Encased in ice and bound to the Helm of Domination and Frostmourne, Ner’zhul became the original Lich King.
Arthas Menethil: A human paladin of the Silver Hand who was corrupted by Frostmourne while pursuing the dreadlord Mal’Ganis. Arthas eventually traveled to Northrend and merged with Ner’zhul’s spirit by placing the Helm of Domination on his head.
When the Lich King says he was “once a shaman,” he speaks as Ner’zhul, whose shamanic connection to spirits allows him to sense that same power in Thoralius’s incense magic. This single line elegantly acknowledges the merged consciousness inhabiting that terrifying armor.
Cross-Expansion Foreshadowing
The Lich King’s speech about allowing you to “become more powerful” before you serve him is remarkably prescient. Throughout WotLK, you grow stronger through questing, dungeons, and raids. The Argent Tournament specifically trains champions to face him.
In the final confrontation atop Icecrown Citadel, the Lich King reveals this was his plan all along. He allowed the tournament to proceed specifically to identify the strongest champions, whom he intended to slay and resurrect as his most powerful death knights. He wanted you stronger. Every victory you achieved in Northrend served his ultimate purpose.
Only Tirion Fordring shattering Frostmourne with the Ashbringer prevented this fate, freeing the souls trapped within the runeblade to bind their former captor long enough for the champions to prevail.

Vikstone's War JournalThoralius recovered from his trance, shaking.

“The spirit world has fallen under the sway of the Lich King. Fearsome creatures made of pure nightmare now stand watch over the realm of the elements.” His voice was hoarse. “I sense that these val’kyr are guarding a terrible secret. I am too old and weak to survive another journey. You must go in my place.”
He pressed a smoldering incense burner into my hands.
“Take this to Wyrmskull Village and use it to enter the spirit world. Find the large dwelling in the northeast. Avoid the val’kyr at all costs lest they make you a permanent fixture in their world.”
The incense burned cold. When I inhaled, Wyrmskull shifted around me. It was the same village, but drained of color, heavy with the Lich King’s taint. His corruption had seeped even here, into the realm of spirits where the dead should find peace. Val’kyr drifted between the buildings like carrion birds. I kept to the edges, moving slow, staying out of their notice.
The northeastern dwelling held what Thoralius sought.
Two vrykul ghosts stood over a cradle, echoes trapped in an endless moment. The male pointed at the infant inside. The female wept.
“The gods have forsaken us! We must dispose of it before Ymiron is notified!”
“NO! You cannot! I beg of you! It is our child!”
“Then what are we to do, wife? The others cannot find out.”
The infant in the cradle was small. Unusually small.
I let the incense fade and carried what I’d seen back to Thoralius.
“I do not understand,” he said slowly. “The creatures you saw looked like the vrykul that are attacking Valgarde?”
I told him what the ghosts had shown me. Parents weeping over a child born wrong by vrykul standards. Born human?
The tablets McSorf found suggested vrykul were ancestors of humanity. Now I understood how. The vrykul hadn’t conquered the humans or driven them out. They had created them, generation after generation of “cursed” infants, and tried to destroy what they’d made.
Some of those children must have survived, enough to become a people.
Arthas had corrupted the spirit realm to guard this secret. I wondered if he knew it, or if the val’kyr simply hoarded shame the way dragons hoard gold.
Thoralius knew the vision was unfinished, and the rest of it was still sitting in the spirit world under val’kyr guard as the Anguish of Nifflevar.
