Walkthrough

This is a challenging escort quest with fast respawns and an impatient NPC. Preparation is essential.

Finding Bonker:

The cave entrance is at [54, 13]. Follow the spiraling path down to the bottom of the cavern where Bonker is chained near Magmothregar‘s pit.

Shortcut: You can jump down the hole at [55, 12] to land directly near Bonker’s location. Watch your fall damage.

Pre-Escort Preparation (Critical)

1. Clear the path on the way down. Kill all snobolds and shamans along the route you’ll be escorting Bonker back through.
2. Kill Magmothregar last, right before starting the quest. His respawn timer is under one minute. If you kill him too early, he will respawn during the escort.
3. Prioritize the north side of the cavern. This is where most of the dangerous pulls will occur during the escort.

Priest Tip: Use Mind Soothe on magnataur and snobolds to avoid accidental aggro during the escort. They’re humanoids.

The Escort

Accept the quest by speaking to Bonker. He’ll say his lines and immediately start moving.

What to Expect:

• Bonker moves quickly and does not wait for you
• He will aggro multiple enemies at once
• Shamans are the biggest threat due to their totems
• Magmothregar will almost certainly respawn mid-escort if not killed immediately before starting

Bonker’s Strengths:

• He’s surprisingly tanky and can absorb significant damage
• He prioritizes destroying shaman totems (let him aggro shamans first)
• If you die, he can hold his own for a while. Rush back quickly.

Priority Targets:

1. Shaman totems (70 HP, one-shot them)
2. Offspring of Magmothregar (low HP, quick kills)
3. Everything else

Tip: Let Bonker aggro first. When he engages a shaman, he immediately switches to the totem and one-shots it, saving you the trouble.

PvP Server Warning

Horde players can kill Bonker without flagging for PvP, and there’s nothing you can do to stop them. If you’re on a PvP server, scout for enemy players before starting.

AoE Classes: Be careful with area spells in the narrow cave passages. You can accidentally flag yourself by hitting enemy players, and they may retaliate by killing Bonker. Death Knights using Unholy Blight, Corpse Explosion, or Wandering Plague are particularly prone to this.

If Things Go Wrong

Bonker is durable. Players report dying during the escort and returning to find him still fighting multiple enemies. Sprint back as fast as possible.

If Bonker dies, the quest fails, and you’ll need to wait for him to respawn at the bottom of the cave. This is frustrating given the mob respawn rates.

Story Context: The Forgotten Gnome

Bonker came to Magmoth on a diplomatic mission to parley with the snobolds. It did not go well.

Bonker’s introduction: “I came in here to parlay with the snobolds, but their main shaman, Kaganishu, decided instead that I’d make a tasty snack for Magmothregar. Wait… what?! They didn’t send you?! DID THEY FORGET ABOUT ME?!”

Fizzcrank’s response: “Huh? What? Bonker who? I’ve no idea who you’re talking about, but I’ll take your word for it. If you rescued him or her from the pit of Magmoth then I suppose you deserve a reward. Let me see what I’ve got lying around in here…”

Yes, they really did forget about him.

Bonker’s Commentary

Bonker has entertaining dialogue throughout the escort:

• “Right then, no time to waste. Let’s get outa here!”
• “A gnome tries to make some friends, and then BAMM… the next thing you know, he’s in shackles!”
• “I can’t believe my own people forgot about me.”
• “What? You think I want to be Magmothregar’s next appetizer? Get me outa here!”
• “I AM NOT AN APPETIZER!”
• “Hey! I’m walking here!”
• “The only good vermen is a dead vermen!”

Lore: The Snobolds and Magnataur

Snobolds are arctic kobolds who serve as caretakers for the magnataur, receiving protection in exchange for their service. Unlike regular kobolds with their candles, snobolds carry receptacles filled with bloodspore flowers on their heads.

Magmoth is home to Magmothregar, a magnataur lord who lives in the cave with his harem of mates and offspring. The snobold shaman Kaganishu leads the Magmoth herd and has a dark history. He previously captured and ritually sacrificed Farseer Grimwalker, a Horde orc, creating a fetish from his body to learn shamanism. Bonker was next on the menu.

Cross-Expansion Connection: Snobolds in Trial of the Crusader

Snobolds return as adds during the Beasts of Northrend encounter in the Trial of the Crusader raid.

During the Gormok the Impaler phase, he throws snobolds onto players’ heads where they deal continuous damage until killed. The Magnataur Hunting Horn, which summons a Snobold Runt companion pet, has a small chance to drop from this encounter.
